Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Observance

This program brings Carolina students together in order to give back to the greater Chapel Hill community. Pre-registration is required at http://www.unc.edu/rocts.

MLK Youth Leadership Program | 9:30 a.m. | Meet at Multipurpose Room, Carolina Union | map

This program offers middle school students the chance to explore King’s dream through games, activities and performance. More information is available at http://www.unc.edu/rocts.

Unity Dinner | 5:00 p.m. | Great Hall, Student Union

In the spirit of Dr. King’s vision that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin, Carolina students from an array of organizations will come together to share dinner and make new connections. Registration is limited.

He Was a Poem, He Was a Song | 7:00 p.m. | The Sonja Haynes Stone Center Theater | map

Community members, faculty, staff and students come together to celebrate Dr. King’s life and work. The program features music by Bradley Simmons of the Duke Djembe Ensemble and jazz quartet, R-EFFEcT, led by saxophonist Ron Baxter. A reception will follow the free program.

As a poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director, she continues to travel the world, spreading her legendary wisdom. Within the rhythm of her poetry and elegance of her prose lies Angelou’s unique power to help people of every orientation span the lines of race. Angelou captivates audiences through the vigor and sheer beauty of her words and lyrics. This event will be sign interpreted.

UNC Students must present UNC One Card: Two tickets per One Card; Limit 2 One Cards per student. General Public: FREE Reserved-Seat Tickets available Thursday, January 15. Limit 2 tickets per person. All tickets must be picked up in person from the Memorial Hall box office.

Screening and Discussion with Filmmaker: “Darius Goes West” | 7:00 p.m. | Student Union Great Hall | map

Campus Y will screen the documentary “Darius Goes West” followed by a panel discussion with the crew of this highly decorated film. Darius is a 19-year-old man who dreams of finding a cure for fatal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and of making more of the nation accessible to individuals using wheelchairs. Eleven friends help him realize this dream when they take Darius on the ride of his life.

This program is a cultural celebration that brings diverse campus organizations together in song, dance and poetry. Langston Hughes’s poem “I, Too, Sing America,” marks a slave’s pride in his heritage and his vision of a day when all prejudice is put aside and equality is reached.
