My passion for this position grows everyday as we directly impact lives and welcome new students to the Carolina family. There is a rich history behind the office and I am very proud to be apart of its continuing legacy."

This position allows me to work with a multitude of students, educators, and staff, hear their ideas, and put them to action.”
Mycal Brickhouse Mycal Brickhouse | 2013 | Major: Political Science and African American Studies | Hometown: Fayetteville, NC | Position: MLK Banquet Coordinator | “I am very honored to have this position, which allows me to interact with University and Community Officials. BrandonNeely Brandon Neely | 2014 | Major: Global Studies / English | Hometown: Gastonia, NC | Position: Programs and Facilities Coordinator | “The Minority Student Recruitment Committee has been the sole reasoning behind my attendance at UNC. After attending Project Uplift and High School Honors Days, I knew UNC was the place that I wanted to be. It gives me great pleasure to serve in the department that has done so much for me. As the Programs and Facilities Coordinator, I am going to ensure that these programs continue to make lasting impressions on the students that come through our doors.”
Carissa Davis Carissa Davis | 2013 | Major: Journalism and Mass Communication | Hometown: Central Islip, NY | Position: Campus Visitation Coordinator | "I am honored to be given the opportunity to represent the university in my position with Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. A visit to campus, whether it is a student's first visit or last visit before deciding where they will attend college, is one of the most influential and important impressions of our university. Seeing prospective students benefit from attending our programs is by far one of the most encouraging aspects of this position."
AC Locklear AC Locklear | 2013 | Major: Psychology and Native American Studies | Hometown: Pembroke, NC | Position: Native American Programs Coordinator | “I am where I am today because of the programs offered through Diversity and Multicultural affairs. These programs allowed me to meet students from similar backgrounds as myself and allowed me to see how much passion they had for their school. I owe my college experience to programs such as Project Uplift and North Carolina Renaissance. It's only fitting that I continue the tradition of reaching out to future Tar Heels.”
Oscar Gomez Oscar Gomez | 2013 | Major: Economics | Position: Technical Coordinator | Hometown: Pembroke, NC |
Theresa Flores Theresa Flores | 2013 | Major: Psychology | Hometown: Brooklyn, NY | Position: Hispanic/Latino Programs Coordinator | “What I love most about Carolina is that despite the fact that it’s such a big school it still manages to retain the small-community feel that so many students look for. The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs has also made sure to provide me with endless opportunities to give back to my community and to connect with my culture, and it also gives me the chance to embrace the overall diversity that Carolina has to offer.”
Tina Kawatu Tina Kawatu | 2013 | Major: History | Hometown: Jacksonville, NC | Position: North Carolina Renaissance Coordinator | "Originally from the Northeast, I've lived in the "smaller" town of Jacksonville, NC since my junior year in high school. Very different than cities like Raleigh or Charlotte, Jacksonville has a smaller percentage of students attending prestigious institutions such as Carolina. This is not to say students from rural or small towns are incapable, but that they are lacking in information about higher institutions. However, this is all changing due to programs in the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, such as North Carolina Renaissance and Project Uplift, which target students from all types of underrepresented populations. I am glad that Diversity and Multicultural Affairs takes the time to reach out and be inclusive of EVERYONE because without it, I would not be the Carolina Student I am today."
Mike Jones Mike Jones | 2014 | Major: Sociology and African American Studies | Hometown: Ahoskie, NC | Position: North Carolina Renaissance Coordinator |"The events and programs sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs have changed my life. I am grateful for everything this department has done. I had the honor to attend the North Carolina Renaissance program while in high school and it opened my eyes to higher education and the Carolina experience. It taught me to strive for excellence despite my background and lack of resources. I look forward to working with high school sophomores and helping them understand that although they may come from a rural area or attend an underrepresented high school they can achieve many great things if they are motivated and determined. ”
