Delta Upsilon is committed to serving the Chapel Hill community by supporting a number of philanthropic activities. Our main event is participation in the Orange County Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. We began participating in this 24-hour-long walk in 2005 in memory of Brother Doug Steele, Ohio State ’79, the father of one of our re-founding brothers. In that time we have raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and have had 100% brother participation in the event.
Our brothers have volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house, helping folks who are in town while loved ones receive cancer treatment at UNC Hospitals. Additionally, many of our brothers do individual community service as members of the local rescue squad or through their churches.
We also support the following Greek charity events:
- Kappa Delta’s Shamrock ‘n’ Run – Prevent Child Abuse America
- Alpha Chi Omega –Dance Marathon for the UNC Children’s Hospital
- Phi Beta Phi –Dance Marathon for the UNC Children’s Hospital
- Delta Delta Delta – Dance Marathon for the UNC Children’s Hospital
- Zeta Tau Alpha’s Franklin 5K – Orange County Rape Crisis Center.
As you may know, today's college students are very involved in the community. In fact, in the annual "best house" competition, each fraternity is rated by the university for it's philanthropic endeavors. Last year, DU was ranked second on campus in this area, and the year before that, first. Eager to continue its leadership in such endeavors, the brothers of DU recently formed a partnership with the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross. During the summer, the Red Cross contacted president Kyle Rogers regarding a possible collaboration. When proposed to the chapter, the partnership passed with a unanimous vote. The official agreement was signed on September 27, 2007. The Red Cross will provide each brother with training to become a full time volunteer. After brothers receive training, they can aid in disaster relief efforts that occur throughout Orange County and will also be qualified to assist the Red Cross in other locations. A blood drive was held at the DU house on October 30 to kick off the new partnership.
