Campaign in Brief

Dear Friends and Fellow Tar Heels,

Wow! I can’t believe the campaign has already begun. The last few months of hard work have now turned into this—a website and a platform, posters and an apprehensive enthusiasm about the race. I’ll use this website over the next few weeks as my headquarters for updates about the campaign and the race in general, and of course I will always keep my platform and a few thoughts up on the site. But for these first few days of the campaign, I just wanted to write something casual about myself to share.

Your first question for me is probably, “Why are you running?” And so I’ll begin by responding to that.

I decided to run for a few reasons. One was my utter obsession with UNC: I love this school and it would be a dream to have a direct hand in its growth and development. The second was that I had definite ideas of how I wanted UNC to develop in the near future, and things that I thought UNC had to address in order to remain such an excellent university. And the third was that thought I had a different personality than the typical SBP, and probably a different approach to Student Government; and I see those as good things. I like bringing different groups and minds together, and I am proud of my ability to do so. And I want to make Student Government something that everyone wants to be a part of: I want to make bettering this University something exciting for all of you, too.

More than at most other schools, the Student Body President at UNC has the power to directly shape policy. So I encourage you to check out the platform and read through our ideas for UNC. The “Abbreviated Platform” is a good, quick read—you can easily control how much information you want my expanding or condensing the selection. But if you have time, I believe you would find the “Entire Platform” a very interesting read. In this document, I’ve gone more in-depth in explaining my reason for proposing these measures and how I plan on accomplishing them.

We have approached every aspect of our platform with three things in mind:

  • How would this measure would make life easier and more convenient for students (“efficiency”)?
  • How would this initiative have a positive long-term impact on this University and its students (“vision”)?
  • How would these ideas would involve all portions of the student population and bring different communities together (“everyone”)?

We have great ideas: the idea for a different course registration system has the power to address significant issues of student dissatisfaction with course offerings and should attend to student concerns about getting into the classes they most need and most want. This system would also have bearing on my idea for improving course offerings, which is one of the most critical issues which UNC needs to be addressing. But we have lighter issues, too: I can’t tell you how many people asked about having a party in the Pit—but we’ve included it in the platform, for you!

This platform has been painstakingly researched, and I have put hundreds of hours into platform preparation. Every single item on the platform has gone before at least one administrator. I am honest about what I hope to achieve and what I think reasonable guidelines for achievement are.

But we want to hear your thoughts, too! Go to “Contact Us” and send us a note to let us know what you think about our ideas. I want to serve you to the fullest capacity next year. Please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to bring to my attention!

This will certainly be a challenging race, but I can’t wait to have the opportunity to communicate and further collaborate with students across all of UNC’s campus. Thanks for checking out the site. It will soon be undergoing even more changes, so check in again during the next few days!

Sincerely,

Eve
