SECTION VIII: RECREATION AND LEISURE

A wide range of artistic, cultural and recreational events and facilities are available to all employees on campus. Included in these offerings are activities and performances sponsored by various organizations. Employees may subscribe to a number of newsletters and calendars. Notices of the events are also published in the University Gazette, The Daily Tar Heel and local newspapers.

Ackland Art Museum

Since its founding in 1958, Carolina’s Ackland Art Museum has established a reputation as one of the best university art museums in America.    Over the past decade, the Ackland has greatly expanded its outreach to University students and faculty, area school children and community groups through its educational programming and exhibits.  The Museum’s collection includes the art of Asia, Africa, Europe and America, with works ranging from ancient times to the 21st century.   Call 966-5736 or visit www.ackland.org for gallery times and further information.

Athletic Events

All employees receive a complimentary season pass for various athletic events excluding football and men's basketball. For Varsity Men's Basketball and Football events, employees receive a discount on the ticket price. Please contact the Athletic Department (962-5411) for additional information.

Campus Dining Facilities

Carolina Dining offers one of the premiere campus food service programs in the country. The award winning Lenoir Hall features Lenoir Mainstreet retail venues offering everything from sizzling salads to Chick-Fil-A. Take a ride up the escalator to our Top of Lenoir “unlimited seconds” dining room and you can feast on hand tossed pizza cooked in wood fired ovens to fresh pasta or rotisserie meats and home style vegetables. On the South side of campus located in the heart of the residence halls, Chase Hall’s “all you can eat” menu features a wide selection of entrees, vegetables, deli, pizza and a cooked to order sauté station.  Overwhelmingly rated number 1 for customer satisfaction in a survey of sophomores and seniors for the entire 16-school UNC system, Carolina Dining Service also features retail locations in the Kenan-Flagler School of Business, Café McColl; the Thurston Bowles Building, Tar Heal Café; and the Carolina Union grab ‘n go Union Station.  In addition to our on-campus locations, Carolina Dining Service provides elegant catering and special event meals in the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education for on site consumption or for delivery anywhere on campus.

Also on campus, the Student Store Snack bar operations are available in the Daniels Building featuring the Pit and Daily Grind Espresso Café, the Law Bar located in the School of Law, the Circus Room in Jackson Hall, the Nook in Rosenau Hall, the Blue Ram in the Y-Court, Osler in Berryhill Hall and the Health Affairs Bookstore and Coffee Bar. The Student Store operations feature sandwiches, snacks, convenience items and beverages.

 

Other dining facilities managed by the UNC Health Care System include Wendy’s in the Neuroscience Building, the Grapevine Cafeteria in Brinkhouse Bullitt Building, the Coffee Shop and Coffee Bar located in Memorial Hospital and a new cafeteria scheduled to be open June 2001 in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

 

In addition, Carolina’s four diamond restaurant, The Crossroads Restaurant and Bar, is located in the Carolina Inn operated by Doubletree Hotels; the Carolina Club located in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center operated by Country Clubs of America serves meals to their guests and members.  (See alumni section of this publication for details on membership).

Campus Tours

The Visitors’ Center, located at the west entrance to the Morehead Building and Planetarium, is a unit of Community Relations in the Department of University Relations.   It is the welcoming arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Visitors can take a 45-minute pre-recorded walking tour of the historic campus and watch a 10 minute video about the campus.  Personally guided historic tours are available by appointment.   Visitors may also pick up maps, guides and brochures that will enable them to make the most of their time on our campus. There is also an internet-accessible computer and telephone available to visitors in the center.

The Visitors’ Center phone number is 962-1630, and the hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and most Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a walking historic tour at 11 a.m.  The Center’s web page, which includes a downloadable, printable map can be viewed from the main University web page, www.unc.edu, then “For Visitors”.   Limited parking by permit is available in front of the Morehead Building. Parking permits can be obtained in the Center.

The Carolina Club

The Carolina Club is a member-supported dining club located in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. Membership is open to all alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Carolina. Membership in the General Alumni Association is a prerequisite. Special rates are available for faculty and staff.

The Carolina Club offers casual and elegant dining room service, private dining and meeting rooms, and banquet space. The Club also has reciprocal privileges at over 200 clubs across the country.

 

 

Concerts and Performing Artist Series

The Department of Music (962-1039) has many offerings during the year available to employees. Additionally, Playmakers Repertory Company (962-1121) and the Carolina Student Union offer tickets and services such as the Performing Arts Series to employees throughout the year. A Carolina Student Union Privilege Card (962-2285) is available to employees for use of the facilities and other activities.

Discount Tickets, Coupons, and Passes

Discount memberships and coupons to a variety of attractions and events are available to UNC employees. Selection and availability vary according to season and marketing promotions. Please contact the Employee Services Department at 962-1483 for more information.

Faculty-Staff Recreation Association (The Farm)

The UNC Faculty-Staff Recreation Association (The Farm) was organized in 1967 to provide recreational and social facilities for its members and their families. Membership is open to full-time and part-time UNC, UNC Hospitals, and all General Administration employees residing in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-Durham area. The Farm is located on the eastern edge of the Mason Farm tract via Raleigh Road NC 54). The Farm offers programs and facilities for total family recreation including tennis, swimming and others. The Association is not funded by the University and is financially self-supporting. Members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues. Call 962-3933 for more information.

Finley Golf Course

Finley Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course owned by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and home of the UNC Golf teams. The course is open to the public and discounted fees are available to UNC employees, students and alumni members. The course was re-designed by Tom Fazio in 1999 and is located on Old Mason Farm Road and Finley Golf Course Road off Highways 54 and 15-501. Call 962-2349 for more information and fees.

Kerr Lake Recreation

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science manages the University's Kerr Lake Recreation Area, a recreation facility located on a 230-acre peninsula on Kerr Lake, one of North Carolina's most popular locations for water sports, camping and outdoor relaxation. The shores and coves are well suited for swimming and fishing, and the lake is ideal for water skiing, canoeing and sailing. Kerr Lake offers beautiful, wooded campsites on the lake. The facility is located north of Henderson, NC, about 11/2 hours by car from Chapel Hill. Employees may purchase annual or daily permits from the Campus Recreation Office at 203 Woollen Gym or call 962-1153.

Morehead Planetarium

Located on East Franklin Street, the Morehead Planetarium offers a wide range of multi-media star shows, classes and big screen offerings. Employees may become members of the Planetarium or simply attend their advertised programs. Special programs for children are offered throughout the year. North Carolina Botanical Garden

The North Carolina Botanical Garden is a regional research center for the conservation and interpretation of plants, particularly those native to the southeastern United States. The main visitor site, located on the U.S. 15-501 Bypass and Old Mason Farm Road, features natural habitat gardens, native perennial borders interplanted with rare plants, an extensive carnivorous plant collection, an aquatic collection, a garden of flowering plant families, the Mercer Reeves Hubbard Herb Garden, accessible gardening demonstration beds, over two miles of nature trails through Piedmont woodland, a daily plant sale (April through October) and the Totten Center administrative building.  The Garden’s main visitor site, Coker Arboretum, Mason Farm Biological Reserve and other lands comprise nearly 600 acres.  For a schedule of events, tours and other information, please call (919) 962-0522 or visit the Garden’s website at www.unc.edu/depts/ncbg.

Pool and Gym Privilege Card

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science offers employees an opportunity to purchase a privilege card which allows use of any of the University's gyms and athletic facilities. Facilities include the indoor and outdoor pools, racquetball courts, weight rooms, basketball courts, tennis courts and many others. A privilege card may be purchased from the UNC One Card Office located in Daniels Building, 962-1385.
