POLICY 43
Effective Date: 07/01/1996
Last Modified Date: 06/29/2004
Statutes and Responsibility for Care
The Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) directs the purchase, care, and use of all vertebrate animals on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The DLAM is responsible for ensuring that Federal and other regulatory statutes relating to the transportation, care, experimental use, and treatment of animals are followed by all animal users on campus.
Quality Health Standards
Certain quality health standards for newly purchased animals must be maintained by the DLAM to ensure that animal colonies and experiments are not threatened by the introduction of new diseases.
Approval by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
Before researchers place any animal orders, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) must review and approve a protocol explaining the proposed use of the animals. Please call the Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU) at 966-5569 for further information on the procedures for obtaining such an approval. See also the IACUC Web site.
Purchase Authorization
All mammalian and avian species to be purchased for use in research and/or teaching must be purchased through the DLAM. In order to expedite animal purchases, the DLAM maintains a number of open purchase orders with suppliers of most animals. Amphibians, fish, and other cold-blooded animals may be purchased directly by the researcher, but the principal investigator is required to report the quantity ordered to the IACUC.
Purchase Request
Requests for animals may be placed by fax (843-9340), phone (843-9249) or in person (1119 Thurston) from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Monday noon is the deadline for placing orders to be received the following week. Researchers are required to furnish their IACUC Protocol number and valid UNC account number when ordering animals.
Animals Received from Sources Other than Commercial Vendors
For disease control purposes, researchers obtaining animals from colleagues at other institutions must be approved by the DLAM veterinary staff (Dr. Dwight Bellinger, 966-3111) before such animals are allowed on the UNC campus. Please contact the DLAM for the special requirements that pertain to this situation (843-9249). The DLAM does not accept animals donated by private owners.
Assistance
Any question relating to this policy should be addressed to the DLAM personnel (966-2909 or 966-2521).
