Before purchasing radioactive materials, obtain authorization by submitting an application to Environment, Health, & Safety. The Radiation Safety Officer will review the application with the principal investigator and will either grant preliminary approval or indicate that the application will require approval by the Radiation Safety Committee before the project can begin.
To order radioactive materials, authorized users submit a Purchase Requisition to Environment, Health, & Safety for approval. If all safeguards are met, the Radiation Safety Officer signs the Purchase Requisition and forwards it to Purchasing Services.
- Submit an application for authorization. Application forms may be obtained from Environment, Health, & Safety and should be returned to that office for review once complete.
- Wait for approval. After reviewing the applcation, the Radiation Safety Officer notifies the applicant of preliminary approval; or, in cases involving unusual or hazardous use of radioactive materials, the Radiation Safety Committee reviews the application before granting final approval.
- Prepare a Purchase Requisition. Send the completed Requisition and a certificate of current inventory to Environment, Health, & Safety. The Radiation Safety Officer verifies that the requisitioner is in compliance with safety standards, current in monthly inventory reports, and within his/her authorized quantity; signs the Requisition; and forwards it to Purchasing. If the authorized user does not meet the safety check requirements, the Requisition is returned to the applicant with an appropriate explanation.
