Planning for Construction

The focus of the efforts of Facilities Planning and Design is on planning for the construction of new facilities (or renovation of existing facilities) to meet the needs of the academic programs of the University. The processes through which projects are developed are complex and involve many persons including the using department, the University administration, the Construction Management, Facilities Services, and the University Environment, Health, & Safety as well as appropriate agencies in State and local government. It is the duty of Facilities Planning and Design to coordinate the development of these projects through the planning and design phases. Other offices assume the coordinating responsibilities as projects move into construction, and finally to occupancy by the user.

Flow Charts

The following flow charts diagram the two phases of project development for which Facilities Planning and Design is responsible. The charts also show where departmental input is required.

  1. The planning phase (Project Planning Process) begins with an academic program (or proposed program) and ends with a defined Capital Improvement project.
  2. The design phase (Project Design Process) begins with an authorized Capital Improvement project and ends with completion of detailed plans and specifications and the award of construction contracts.
