RE:  The Robert R. Cornwell Unsung Hero Award University
Call for Nominations

We are pleased to call for nominations for the Robert R. Cornwell Unsung Hero Award which was established in 1996 in recognition of the long-term contributions of Mr. Cornwell, a university employee who died unexpectedly in 1994. This award is presented annually to a current, full-time, permanent employee who has provided significant service *in support of the University over a long period of time and, generally, from a background position. Excellence in the quality of work performed is the standard used for selecting the recipient, but of equal importance is the likelihood that the employee's work is unnoticed by much of the University community. The Cornwell Award conveys recognition and appreciation by the University of the outstanding, but often invisible, work of many of its employees.

You are invited to nominate a faculty or staff university employee from your unit or from another department using the attached nomination form. Please feel free to duplicate the form as needed. Nominations must be received no later than 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 19th Nominations are not carried over from year to year. A committee composed of faculty and staff, along with Mrs. Joy Cornwell, will chose the winner who will be honored with a plaque and modest cash award at a ceremony to be held in early May.

Bob Cornwell served Carolina for over twenty years as Associate Registrar and as Research Associate in the Office of Institutional Research. His work was outstanding and contributed in many ways to the University, but was often unnoticed except by those directly involved. We hope to preserve his memory through the Cornwell Award by recognizing other UNC employees who make a significant contribution but are rarely noticed.

If you are interested in contributing to the Cornwell Award you can do so by participating in the University Campaign or by sending a check to the Development Office (Gifts Processing), CB#6100, 600 Nationsbank Plaza,

Fortner Winners:

1996 Mr. Hal Mann, Physics & Astronomy
1997 Ms. Hazeline Lewis, Center for Health Promotion & Disease
1998 Mr. Dan Harris, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
1999 Ms. Linda Cook, Health Behavior & Health Education

Thank you.
