MEMORANDUM
| TO: |
Deans,
Directors, and Department Chairs |
| FROM: |
Susan
H. Ehringhaus, Convener, Campus Security Committee |
| SUBJECT: |
Evening
Activities on Campus--Safety and Security Considerations |
As the autumn
days grow shorter, the Campus Security Committee requests that you remind
faculty, staff, and students who attend classes, meetings, and other campus
and community activities at night to be conscious of their personal safety
when Traveling to and from those activities and when they are working alone
in campus buildings after regular business hours. Please circulate and/or
post this notice and mention it at meetings with faculty, staff, and students.
Faculty,
staff, and students should keep doors locked while working in labs or offices
at night. When walking at night, they should plan their routes in advance
so they can stay in well-lit areas, remain alert to their surroundings
at all times, and never walk alone. As preferable alternatives to walking,
they should call Point-to-Point, or catch the U Bus or the P2P Xpress.
-
Anyone who notices
something suspicious or out of the ordinary should notify University Police
at
-
962-8100
(routine calls) or, for emergency calls, 911.
-
Emergency call
boxes with direct lines to the University Police are located around campus.
Call boxes are activated by pushing a button.
-
The fare-free
U Buses circle the campus in both directions between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
-
During the fall
semester between dusk and dawn, the Point-to-Point Campus Shuttle (P2P)
is available to transport faculty, staff, and students around campus and
to their cars in campus parking lots seven days a week. To arrange for
a ride, call 962-7867 (TDD 962-7142 for hearing impaired only).
-
For those driving
to campus after dark, there are blue and red P2P communication boxes in
seven campus parking lots. Just drive up to the box, push the button, and
you will be talking to the P2P dispatcher. This allows you to stay in your
car until the shuttle arrives to pick you up. P2P boxes are located in
the following lots: Bell Tower (BG), Bowles (S-1 1), Manning (F), P lot,
PR lot, Craige Parking Deck, and the Health Affairs Parking Deck.
-
The P2P Xpress
runs from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. seven days a week during academic semesters
for faculty, staff, and students. Shuttle arrival times (at 15 minute intervals)
are posted at the 6 fixed- schedule stops. Riders must show a UNC One Card
or University ID. Service may be suspended briefly during special events.
-
The SAFE Escort
service provides escorts (for solo students only) on the main campus during
the semester from 7 p.m. to I a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Call 962-SAFE
(962- 7233) to arrange for an escort to meet you at your campus building.
You can also stop by the SAFE Escort desk 'in Davis Library (until midnight)
or in the Undergraduate Library (from midnight to I a.m.).
