| RE: | Hammer-Siler-George Associates - Study of RTP |
The consulting firm of Hammer- Siler-George Associates has been commissioned to conduct a study on the impact of the Research Triangle Park on the State and the region. I have enclosed an institutional response to a series of questions that they raised concerning our interactions and relationships with different entities at RTP. The results show an impressive level of activity. If you look at the "Source" and "Response" columns carefully, however, it is disconcerting that in some categories, we have no systematic information

(Reportable) Responses to Ham mer-Siler-George-Associates Questions Concerning
RTP/UNC-CH Connections
| Question | Source | Response |
| 1) "Number and dollar volume of contracts and grants to UNC-CH from RTP entities during the past calendar year and the last 5 years." | 1) Office of Research Services -- ORS searched its databases for information concerning recent awards to UNC-CH from organizations with offices in RTP (67 total). The search generated results for 16 organizations. It should be emphasized, however, that some of theseentities also have offices outside the "Park." Determining what resources came solely from RTP is therefore difficult. | 1) From FY94 to FY98, 16 organizations with RTP offices provided awards of $39,462,627 to UNC-CH. (See attached spreadsheet for mordetail). |
| 2)"Number and dollar volume of joint RTP/UNC-CH grants won, where UNC was the primary recipient..." | 2) Office of Contracts and Grants -- Contracts and Grants provided a comprehensive list of FY98 awards inwhich some part of the funded project was subcontractedto a non-UNC-CH party. Finding, a reliable total for all subcontracted research RTP firms represented in this category was difficult, but clearly Battelle and RTI were both represented in a ubstantial manner. | 2) In FY98, Battelle received $668,856 and RTI $1,956,900 in awards from UNC-CH. Their combined total was $2,625,756. |
| 3)"Number and dollar volumn of fellowships, travel assistance, intership/coops provided to UNC-CH students by RTP entities." | 3) The Department of Computer Sciences -- According to the Office of Research Services and Office of Institutional Research, there is no campus-wide database containing this information. Computer Sciences, however, has substantial RTP contacts and provides a specific, unit-level example of contacts in this area. | 3) Computer Sciences reports approximately $77,000 annually in fellowship support from RTP entities and roughly $120,000 in "unrestricted research funding." |
| 4)"Number of UNC-CH Ph.D., Masters and Bachelors grads who have been hired by entities in the Park in the last five years. | 4) UNC-CH General Alumni Association -- The Association searched its comprehensive alumni database for RTP employment addresses. This business address information is self-reported by the degree recipient, therefore the count in this category is probably a low. | 4) From 1993-98, 282 UNC-CH degree recipients reported RTP employment addresses. |
| 5) "The number of RTP staff who serve as adjunct/visiting faculty ... and the number who serve on advisory councils." | 5) School of Medicine - Discussions with UNC-CH College of Arts and Sciences Deans and with the University's Institutional Research Office and the , University's Human Resources administrators indicate there is no central database containing this information. Information does exist on the individual unit lever, however. Data was gathered in the School of Medicine from the following units -- Pharmocology, Toxicology, Cell Biology and Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Physiology, and Microbiology and Immunology | 5) Six units in the School of Medicine report that, currently of 74 total adjuncts, 40 (54%) work at RTP entities. |
| 6) "Typical number of UNC-CH faculty who serve as consultants to RTP entities in a typical year, or over a five year period." | 6) Glaxo Wellcome -- Short of surveying all UNC-CH faculty members individually, campus-wide data for this question can not be acquired. Sample information for this question was gathered from Glaxo Wellcome, however. The company could not ascertain how many UNC-CH employees working at Glaxo Wellcome were faculty members. The company did provide figures for the number of people employed by "Carolina" who presently have access to the Glaxo Wellcome campus or its computer systems. | 6) Currently, 21 UNC-CH employees have access to Glaxo Wellcome facilities. |
| 7) "Philanthropic contributions to The UNC-CH endowment by RTP entities and their executives." | 7) Office of University Advancement -- The office searched its comprehensive database of gifts to UNC-CH for entries involving RTP corporations and executives. They requested information under the following headings -- "gifts and grants," "corporate matching gifts," "corporate gifts in kind," and "corporate executive's gifts." | 7) From 1994-98, the total dollar amount for gifts in these categories is $14,532,954.71. (See attached spreadsheet for more detail). |
| 8) "Any other substantial financial and/or person power support which RTP entities provide UNC-CH" | 8) Office of University Advancement -- Support for facilities construction is an area in which RTP entitiessupport UNC-CH. Following conversations with Facilities Planning and Design, the Contracts and Grants office, and the Office of University Advancement, it was apparent that there is no central database specifically containing this information. The Office of University Advancement does have some examples of RTP activity in this area since 1993. | 8) Since 1993, the Glaxo Wellcome Foundation has provided $800,500 to the Pharmacy Foundation Building Fund. Burroughs Wellcome provided $50,000 to the Business Building Fund. |
