SUBJECT:  Recruitment of Minority Postdoctoral Scholars

We are writing to encourage you to become actively involved in the recruitment of the next class of Carolina Minority Postdoctoral Scholars. The Program has been successful in increasing diversity in the University community and we view it as a Major recruiting tool for attracting potential minority tenure- track faculty as well.

Each year, at least five scholars are chosen for these postdoctoral research appointments. They are supported for two years. These are primarily research appointments although a limited amount of teaching is possible.

The next class of Carolina Minority Postdoctoral Scholars will begin July 1, 1999. Schools and departments that are interested in participating can help by advertising the program in their disciplines and identifying possible candidates. A sample advertisement is attached. The advertisement should specify that applications must be submitted to the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research by February 1, 1999. We will notify successful candidates in early March 1999.

In addition to assisting with advertising, there is an explicit role for schools and departments to play in selecting the 1999 Scholars. Once applications are received, we will forward them to the schools or departments appropriate to act as hosts. If there are multiple applications for individual departments, we will ask the departments to rate them and add comments that will be useful in judging the candidate. A very important criterion for judgment will be the possible availability of a faculty position in the department. We will also request that the departments define the resources that will be made available to a successful candidate including mentoring and the means to ensure that the members of our next postdoctoral class are properly incorporated into the culture of their chosen departments.

The final decision with regard to successful candidates will be made by a committee Chaired by Gerald Home, Director of the Institute of African American Research. It will review the applications and make final recommendations. The current stipend is $34,000. Each department with a successful candidate will normally be expected to fund $4,000 of this amount.

Because this is an important program for the University, please let us know if you need help or advice in advertising. Also, consider that we might be able to help with a recruiting target who has not yet finished his or her Ph.D. If there are special ways to use this Program to help with your recruiting, please let us know. Finally, we would also appreciate your advice about how best to maximize the benefits of the Program so that the successful candidates make the best use of their time at the University and the University has the best opportunity of attracting new minority colleagues.

If you have any questions, or need further information, please contact Sharon Windsor at 962- 1319 or Sharon-Windsor@unc.edu. Thank you for your help.
