MEMORANDUM
| TO: | Deans, Directors and Department Chairs in Academic Affairs and Health Affairs |
| FROM: | Michael Hooker |
| SUBJECT: | 1999 Tar Heel Bus TourDeadline: Friday, February 26,1999 |
The 1997 and 1998 Tar Heel Bus Tours for new faculty were a resounding success. Not only did faculty learn about the state they serve, but they had the opportunity to meet other faculty members from various disciplines across campus.
Now that planning is under way for the 1999 bus tour, I want to remind you all of this excellent opportunity for our new faculty members and ask that you encourage your faculty to take advantage of it. This spring's tour will take place from Monday, May 17, to Friday, May 21 week after commencement. Full-time faculty members with tenured, tenure-track or fixedterm positions who have come to the University in the last three years are invited to apply for the tour. All we ask is that applicants have the time, energy and commitment to make the tour worthwhile.
The five-day bus tour is designed to give new faculty a head start on learning about the state that we serve. The goals of the bus tour are to:
1 . Develop among faculty and administrators an awareness of the state's geography, economy, culture, government and politics, history, educational systems, health issues, and connections to the University.
2. See where our North Carolina students come from.
3. Promote bonding among faculty across disciplines.
4. Encourage service to the public and research to address state problems.
5. Introduce faculty and administrators to the North Carolina that some of them otherwise will never see.
6. Expose our new faculty
members to Carolina's multiple publics. Show that Carolina is connected
to the entire state.
As you can see, this is a
great chance for faculty members to get to know North Carolina. But I need
your help to make sure all eligible faculty members know about this opportunity
before the application deadline on Friday, February 26, 1999. Please familiarize
your new faculty member with the Tar Heel Bus Tour and encourage them to
apply. You'll find attached an application form for you to share with those
who are interested in the tour. Faculty members can also apply on-line
and get more information about the tour by visiting the Tar Heel Bus Tour
web site at http://www.dev.unc.edu/pubrel/bustour.
