SUBJECT:	Faculty participation in University Day ceremonies

This year's University Day celebration will be held on Monday, October 12, 1998, at 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Hall. The speaker will be Professor Chuck Stone of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and we shall also honor six recipients of Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Awards and commemorate the 200th anniversary. of the construction of South Building with a ceremonial relaying of its cornerstone. Faculty and staff will gather at 10:30 a.m. in front of South Building, on the Cameron Avenue side (Gerrard Hall in case of rain).

Please notify Jane Smith (jane smith@unc.edu, 962-0045) by September 30 of the number of faculty members from your unit whom you anticipate will march in the procession. We would welcome your encouragement of their attendance.

Please note also that as an additional event this year, our Student Government leadership has also organized a University picnic to be held on Polk Place immediately following the ceremonies, with the particular hope of promoting closer interaction of students with faculty and staff. The chancellor has offered picnic lunches to the first 50 faculty members who reserve them, and similarly to students and staff. Faculty who wish to reserve lunches should contact Ms. Smith, and all others are welcome to bring their own and join in.
