Letter from Provost Robert Shelton of 2/28/02 concerning faculty incentives [see copy of letter]

FITAC Chair Noblitt agreed to send a brief letter to the Provost highlighting the role of FITAC in contributing to the deliberations of the Academic Task Force in the focus area of 'faculty development'.

Budgeting for IBM Equipment grants

Can we plan a curricular innovation grants program in the current budget climate? Unless funding for the new fiscal year can be ensured, faculty members will likely be reluctant to develop proposals again.

Need for faculty input on IT planning [cf. FITAC propsal for IT Advisory Council]

  • FITAC member expressed interest in learning more about where CCI money comes from, exactly how is it used.
  • How should FITAC's advisory role function? Continue open discussions with Steve Jarrell, but identify a limited number of core issues in advance. Will use the FITAC listserv to begin identifying key issues.
  • IT Advisory Council is being reconstituted at Provost's level.
Search for new VC for Computing

Steve Jarrell is not a candidate. Search committee has not yet been formed, but moving forward. Jim Noblitt will contact Bernadette Gray-Little to discuss FITAC participation on the search committee .

The Portal Project; electronic grade submission [per Lori Casile]

Project is going live next week at my.unc.edu. Faculty are invited and encouraged to log in and provide suggestions / recommendations for additional content for faculty. Trying to integrate backend student systems as portlets; content owners responsible for their own information. ATN is working on super LDAP solution that will help keep rights information updated. Lori will post information on participating to FITAC list.

Status of Digital Library Project [per Bob Henshaw] cf. Donald Haggis letter to FITAC

Support continues for courses making use of media collections. First formal student evaluations conducted last spring, results positive. Services have not grown much due to budget constraints. Next phase of development will migrate interdisciplinary collections and move services toward a more scaleable self-service model.

Discussion about how we can make better use of instrastructure to host support departmental resources that benefit many courses. Several departments are exploring more advanced data-mining capabilities.

Information Ethics [per greg Newby]

Teaching with Technology: What percentage of classrooms should be outfitted with multimedia technologies - all? most? some? Next generation podim design [per Rick Peterson]

Other Notes

Jim Noblitt suggested we take some time out of each meeting for members to present exemplars of projects using information technology. Anyone interested should contact Jim about being placed on the agenda.
