Show and tell: Departmental database of instructional resources:

Jocelyn Neal, Music: History of Country Music Course.
Integrates music files, lyrics, images with homework assignments. Long-term future of collection is with Digital Library Services, will facilitate sharing across departments. Down-side of home-grown is that it requires major time investment on part of the instructor. Discussion with chair about rewards and incentives is ongoing, but leaving things open/flexible is advantageous to both sides at this point. Copyright covered under fair use. Student impact: students no longer want to take notes, seek additional info because class notes are available online. This approach breaks down physical barriers to media. Do not note any major changes in student performance, but student writing assignments shared with classmates are generally better.

Jim Noblitt, Romance Languages. FLRC music/language database.
Integrates music, lyrics, translations and images in an easy-to-use interface. This project is also labor-intensive. Copyright under fair use. Many faculty feel that copyright policy is too cumbersome, and that tenured senior faculty are the only ones who can afford to do this. Student impact: forum assignments have improved student writing.

Discussion of implications for central & distributed IT resources. Need to find a balance between central infrastructure investments and more targeted departmental needs. Some departments have special resource needs, but most are not based on funding models that provide for long-term support and maintenance.

Tommy Mann, representing Student Government Technology Council. Student Govt. Technology Council is fairly representative of student body (1 graduate student). Most are comfortable with technology.

Suggestions/comments:

  • Support a required for-credit course on technology skills. Would help level the playing field for students.
  • Most students welcome the use of technology in the classroom/course.
  • Faculty use is very inconsistent; all faculty should have baseline technology skills.
  • Faculty also need to build on just using the web to disseminate information.
  • A large percentage of student research is conducted online.

Noblitt asked that they consider evaluating the use of instructional technology at UNC. FITAC needs student representative. Tommy will check with Student Government.

Letter to Provost Shelton as action from last meeting. [circulated separately]
- Provost remarks to Faculty Council re: Innovation Grants [per Iola Peed-Neal]

FITAC will continue to talk to Administration about reinstating grants program, mention faculty morale. May also want to consider current emphasis on spreading money thin vs. departmental initiatives. Jim Noblitt will draft a letter to the Adminstration about reinstating a curricular innovation grants program.

- Statement on Academic Planning Task Force [per Linda Carl]:
"FITAC will be one of the groups asked to respond to the plan. FITAC might be thinking about preparing a paragraph about what it would like included in the Academic Plan."

Linda Carl suggests FITAC reach consensus on what it really wants and submit it. FITAC will begin drafting such a statement.

Search for new VC for Computing
- Request from Sue Estroff for FITAC input: "...what do you think it means to faculty to be the "University's CIO?" What do you think faculty want from that position in terms of leadership? Or, how do you think faculty want to hear these things described?"

Consider performance of former Vice Chancellor for Information Technology. Search group that Daniel Anderson and Bob Berger (chair) are serving on is looking at VCIT portfolio. FITAC will begin drafting recommendations.

Holdover items:
- Teaching with Technology: Percentage of classrooms outfitted with multimedia technologies? Next generation podium design? [per Rick Peterson]
- Information Ethics [per greg Newby]:
FITAC to recommend module for information ethics at the Freshman level?
See Newby's presentation @: http://ils.unc.edu/gbnewby/presentations/ethics_curriculum.ppt
