Exemplars - Show and tell

Daniel Anderson, English Department

Presented several technology-enabled approaches to instruction he is involved in. The Business Writing course he teaches uses both online learning and face-to-face learning. Peer review of documents is all done online. Another course considers print literacy repurposed for use in other media. What would student instruction be like if students all had access to digital media production tools?  Heavy emphasis on the use of text in web and video content.

James Lee, new student representative to FITAC

Followed up on issues raised by Tommy Mann during the 10.15.02 FITAC meeting. How will departmental/school infrastructure investments integrate with institutional directions?  Investments are too diffuse.  Would like to see departmental/central investments better coordinated.

Classrooms Update - Rick Peterson, College of Arts and Sciences

Rick chairs the Classroom Design and Advisory Committee. Twelve new media classrooms coming online by the spring semester. Currently facing a $900K shortfall to support exisiting classrooms. FITAC statement of support would be welcome.Average cost of new technology room is between $15-20K (standard) and $40-50K (full media support). Rennovated classrooms lose between 11-30% of their space due to new standards for desk size and spacing.

Letter to Provost Shelton on funding for grants program [circulated separately]

Jim Noblitt led discussion on draft letter to the Provost concerning funding for instructional technology development grants program. It was agreed that the letter should 1) underscore the program's impact on teaching and learning at the University, 2) spell out a clear set of recommendations, and 3) be submitted very soon. Jim agreed to rework letter and post draft to the FITAC mailing list by the end of the week.

Paul Jones, Ibiblio

Paul provided an overview of Ibiblio, an electronic open information archive hosted at UNC-Chapel Hill. For more information on Ibiblio, see his recent interview with Slashdot.
