Course Retention Policy Followup - Jeanne Smythe (ITS) and Libby Evans (ITS)

Followup to draft policy overview (.rtf) presentation during 2/26/02 meeting. See changes in language concerning discussion forums. Seeking FITAC stamp of approval. Intended to be a general policy, but there may be some instructional content that is difficult to track (e.g. discussion forums). Difficult for ITS to know when term of limitations begins. Comments still welcome, should be sent to jeanne_smythe@unc.edu or cit@unc.edu.

Discussion

  • Some instructors may need to delete portions of old course websites (e.g., exam keys) before the statute of limitations. Legal Counsel will have to consider on a case-by-case basis. Response from Legal Counsel still pending.
  • ITS does not want to make applications more difficult for instructors to use, but ITS needs clear direction on parameters, exceptions, etc.

University's Web Accessibility Policy and Initiatives

  • New policy announced last fall to strengthen Univerity's readiness to accommodate students with disabilities
  • Anticipated increase in distance education enrollments is driving policy; difficult for Department of Disability Services to act as intermediary for remote students
  • New policy has largest impacts on distance ed programs
  • FITAC will consider how new policy should be presented to Faculty Council

Proposed Changes to Academic Plan

  • Reponse from Provost Shelton on FITAC concerns was positive.
  • Noblitt attended one of the open forums on academic plan draft.
  • See Noblitt's memo on suggested edits [.rtf] to the plan, and Bollenbacher's addendum [.rtf].
  • Chancellor will vet document at a facilitated Deans/Vice Chancellors' retreat on March 11.

CIO Search

  • Search committee continues to meet, has begun interviewing recruiting committees.

FITAC agenda for Faculty Council Report

Committee members discussed the scope of this year's Annual Report of
Activities and agreed on the following tentative list of items for
inclusion:

  • Report on request to Provost for funding for Innovation Grants
  • Report on desiderata for new Vice Chancellor for Information
    Technology
  • Report on critique of Academic Plan
  • Report on committee sampling of instructional websites at Carolina
  • Report on statement of concern for student training in ethical uses of
    IT

Discussion:

Would like to offer faculty on campus some fresh examples that reflect IT use in the context of the academic plan. CIT, CTL, Libraries will discuss options and report back to FITAC.
