Welcome and Introductions
Announcements

Jim commented that a number of FITAC members had conflicts with today's meeting.

Bob Henshaw has updated the FITAC Web site. If anyone has suggestions for documents to include on the site (such as copies of letters from FITAC to the provost), let Jim know.

CCI Student Survey Results

Iola Peed-Neal presented results of a survey on laptop use by freshmen who entered in 2001 and in 2001. The CCI Study Group includes representatives from the Center for Instructional Technology, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the College of Arts and Sciences (OASIS) and Institutional Research.

The survey questions and a copy of the full report are available online at the Institutional Research Web site: http://www.ais.unc.edu/ir/reports.html. The report presented at this FITAC meeting was designed specifically for the FITAC meeting and is not the same as the online report.

The survey results generated lively debate and discussion among FITAC members. Jim will put the report as a major discussion item on a future FITAC agenda.

Proposed Changes to Academic Plan

The Academic Plan doesn't appear to be operational for this semester. The retreat discussed in previous FITAC meetings has been held. Jim anticipates that the work FITAC did on the Academic Plan will be incorporated.

Exemplars - Show and Tell

The group agreed that we would like to invite Evelyn Daniel to come to a FITAC meeting to repeat the presentation she had scheduled for a ConsiderIT session today.

FITAC Annual Report

Jim will present the FITAC annual report at the Faculty Council meeting on Friday March 28. The report has been distributed to FITAC members. Jim only has 5 minutes for the presentation, so will focus on the bullets at the end of the report.

FITAC Agenda

Jim summarized FITAC's agenda for the remainder of the semester:

  • Continue following the CIO search
  • Open a discussion of the grants program: Should we start a new
initiative, find our own funding, etc?
  • Continue working on incentives for academic use of technology
  • Continue discussions of IT assessment (focus on report presented
    today)
  • Develop a Web site with examples (not necessarily exemplars)
    of instructional technology use
