LING 050 [006E]: Language in the USA
Social & Behavioral Science/Other (SS) [GC Social Science]
Paul Roberge

This seminar examines the linguistic landscape of the United States from the importation of the English language to North America and the disruption of an indigenous linguistic ecology to contemporary language politics. Topics include: regional, social, and ethnic dialects of American English; language policy and planning; language maintenance and shift among immigrant groups; the decline of Native American languages; nativism and the English-only movement; the standard language ideology and the politics of non-mainstream of American English in education (e.g., African American Vernacular English, Appalachian English); slang and solidarity; and the question of language reform as a remedy to inequality, sexism, and stereotyping.
