PATH 056 [006E]: Plagues and
People: An Inquiry into Why We Think We Get Sick and Why They
Thought They Got Sick
Social & Behavioral Science/Other (SS) [GC Social Science]
Howard Reisner
Plagues have occurred through history; they occur today. They
have been a disruptive force and have led to traumatic cultural
change, whether in Classical Athens, Middle Age Europe, or
the Contemporary United States. How did people understand
and respond to epidemic disease through history? How do we
do so today? Students will read a variety of contemporary
accounts. Works will range from the Old Testament (Tanach)
to modern literature, fictional and non-fictional. Through
these readings and discussions we will search for common responses
to and beliefs about plague by both scientists and laypersons.
Student papers will be read by Dr. Reisner, a professional
editor, and by seminar participants.
