For Students: Overview

Hospitality Funds
The goal of these funds is to increase contact between faculty and students beyond the classroom. In order to facilitate that interaction, we can provide instructors with up to $100 to offset the cost of expenses incurred while dining with students or otherwise meeting informally outside the classroom. Faculty do not have to apply in advance for this money, but should note that details regarding the use of FYS funds are provided in the FYS Funding Manual.  Reimbursement requests must be submitted by the instructor of record (we can only make reimbursements to faculty) using the Hospitality Award Reimbursement Form by the last day of exams for the semester.

Course Enhancement Funds
Up to $750 per course is available for special events or activities associated with a FYS, and the average amount funded is $500. Recent examples of expenses covered by Course Enhancement Awards include tickets to events, short-term licensure of software, rental of performance space, transportation, and purchase of unusual course-related supplies. The expectation is that the expenditure of these funds will benefit all of the students in the FYS, but this constraint can be interpreted broadly. The Course Enhancement Award Application should be completed and submitted to FYS Dean Steve Reznick. Applications will be reviewed on 8/1,9/1, and 10/1, and requests that are deemed appropriate will be funded until our semester’s budget is exhausted. Details regarding the use of FYS funds are provided in the FYS Funding Manual. Course Enhancement funds will either be transferred directly to the instructor’s department or instructors will incur costs and receive subsequent reimbursement by completing a Course Enhancement Reimbursement Form.

Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative
The Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative (CEI) has helped us establish a variety of FYS that provide entrepreneurial perspectives in science, economics, liberal arts and society. CEI provides support to develop new seminars and enhance existing ones. Our grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has ended, but mechanisms are being established to sustain the CEI.

APPLES Ueltschi Grants for Service-Learning Courses
The APPLES Service-Learning Program solicits proposals each year for Ueltschi Service-Learning Course Development Grants to develop or enhance a service-learning course that benefits the university and campus community.  The hands-on nature of FYS make them an obvious site for service learning, so Ueltschi Grants are often used to develop new FYS.  For more information including application deadlines, information sessions, and people to contact, visit www.unc.edu/apples/faculty/teach/grant.html
