What is GAANN?
GAANN stands for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need. It is a national program funded by the Department of Education to provide funding for graduate students pursuing the highest degree available in their field of study.
The program emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning by providing graduate students the opportunity to mentor middle school students in science, help teach a college-level course, and be mentored by members of the academic world through enrichment seminars.
Since 2000, GAANN fellows at UNC have particapted actively in after shcool programs at nearby Durham middle schools. The fellows put on a yearly chemistry show at UNC which the middle school students attend. Afterwards, the fellows go to some of the middle schools and show the students that chemistry can be both fun and exciting!
