An associate, Jennifer Delaney, and I (Rebekah Radisch) conceived and produced the first recorded tribute to Dusty Springfield, featuring 17 independent-minded female artists and bands sharing inspired cover versions of songs Dusty did. Forever Dusty was released in April 2000 to enthusiastic reviews. This is its long overdue web page.
The Project
If you’re asking, “Why a tribute to Dusty Springfield?” keep reading. If not, feel free to skip this and just enjoy the music. I’Ave never heard anyone question tribute to Frank Sinatra. Despite his many talents…as a song stylist, entertainer, actor, Frank was no songwriter. That doesn’t stop fans from loving his music or fellow musicians from honoring him with recorded tributes. So it should be with Dusty...and so it is with
Forever Dusty: Homage to an Icon.
Beyond possessing one of the most expressive voices ever heard, Dusty was an unwitting pioneer. She refused to play a whites only show in South Africa in the '60s, boldly discussed issues of sexuality in the '70s, stayed musically relevant in the '80s and waged a battle with breast cancer in the '90s. Through it all, when asked about her stands, statements and stardom, Dusty remained modest about her talents and downplayed her contributions as a role model.
To fans far and wide, Dusty remains a timeless and powerful pacesetter. Forever Dusty's impressive roster, which spans several generations of women, discovered inspiration in Dusty. These seasoned artists spoke of how natural and effortless Dusty sounds—an intimidating discovery to some as they recorded their own versions of her songs. Nevertheless, perseverance paid off with musical breakthroughs, epiphanies, and a wonderfully surprising collection of songs. Listening to each of these tracks for the first time is like opening a gift—something desired, yet far better than possibly imagined.
Besides being wonderful artists in their own right, the exceptionally talented women of Forever Dusty are a creative, energetic, generous and kind group who deserve your unselfish support of their own musical projects. I hope you will take the time to know them and their music just as they took the time to know Dusty. For those of you who are already fans of these women, I hope you will discover the timeless talent of Dusty Springfield.
Background
From bucking apartheid in South Africa, introducing the Motown Sound to Europe, duetting with Jimi Hendrix on her own TV show, to adding her warm vocals to the cool of the Pet Shop Boys and bringing the perfect mood to Pulp Fiction, Dusty Springfield added class to whatever material she performed.
Hers is a voice for all time. Hers is a voice of continuing power and inspiration to today's top artists.
While breast cancer took Dusty's life on March 2, 1999, the timeless legacy of this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer lives on for millions of fans and fellow musicians.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of Forever Dusty benefits breast cancer support organizations.
Forever Dusty features new recordings—unavailable anywhere else—of Dusty Springfield classics by some of today's most innovative women artists.
The artists are among the cutting-edge of contemporary popular music. Many are well established within their genres. Others are expected to emerge as significant forces.
These are the women who are mainstays at all the big festivals and concert halls—from Lilith, Newport, Winterhawk, Telluride, Bumbershoot, Kerrville, and Merle Fest to The Bottom Line, Club Passim, Tin Angel, Birchmere, Cat's Cradle, Bluebird Café, Eddie's Attic, Mucky Duck, Troubadour, Freight & Salvage, Great American Music Hall, Tractor Tavern, etc.
The music consists of time-tested songs by writers with substantial critical and popular acclaim—writers responsible for multiple millions of record sales.
With these songs, artists and the Dusty magic, Forever Dusty is a powerful tribute.
