So, I'm a Witch
but NOT Wiccan

What IS the Difference?

Over the years, when I've stated that I'm most definitely a Witch (with a capitol "W" - I practice my Craft as a religion) but am NOT Wiccan, I've had many folks ask me to delineate the differences. Since it's a frequent question, and I'm becoming better at providing answers, I decided to post this...

I ask that any of my Wiccan sisters and brothers correct me if I make misstatements about Wicca.

1) Wiccans generally accept all deities as aspects of two - Lady & Lord. I accept all deities as discrete, individual personalities who emanate from our Lady and Lord as PERCEIVED source... and Lady and Lord as discrete, individual deities who emanate from the ONE source - NOTHINGNESS.

2) Wiccans generally believe that three-fold return means (in extremely simplistic terms) that if you give a dollar, you get back three. I find that rather nonsensical - the entire universe would spiral out of control (with regard to both good and evil) were that the working modus operandi. While I do accept the Law of Three, I learned it FAR differently than what I hear from my Wiccan friends and acquaintances (please see On the Law of Threefold Returns for a detailed exposition.

3) Wiccans generally accept the Wiccan Rede as a commandment, or damn near to one. I accept "Harm none" as wise council, no more. And, by the way, "wise council" is the literal meaning of rede.

rede
v. tr. red·ed, red·ing, redes. To give advice to; counsel. To interpret; explain.
n. Advice or counsel.
Archaic, from Middle English reden, via Old English raedan.
per the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 3rd edition

4) Wiccans (those who accept reincarnation, anyway) generally believe that the point of reincarnation is to learn and progress until we no longer need to return here - rather like the Buddhist model. I don't... If the entire cosmos is the divine result of our Lady's and Lord's lovemaking, what's the exact point of seeking release (again, please see on the Transmigration of Souls, or Reincarnation for a more complete discussion.

5) Wiccans, regardless of the teachings of their religion, generally accept Wicca as an organized, hierarchical religion (hence 1st, 2nd & 3rd level initiates; priests and priestesses; and high priests and high priestesses). I experience Witchcraft as an essentially shamanic religion. And expounding upon that will take pages and pages (but I don't have a web page which does that, yet).

Hope this was helpful... but it's just the beginning!
