Organization for chartering HSAC began in the spring of 2001 by Sendra Yang, Khou Vang, and Khou Xiong. They envisioned a platform for which the Hmong community could become active in the university scene through service, cultural, and social projects.
HSAC became an officially recognized organization of UNC Chapel Hill in the fall of 2001 and was the first Hmong college student organization in North Carolina. In its first year, HSAC participated in Journey Into Asia, a collaborative annual cultural show organized by the UNC Asian Students Association. The now-annual Carolina Tour also debuted.
Over the years, HSAC has spread awareness about the Hmong identity and participated in numerous cultural events and public service, including presenting a workshop at the 2004 Hmong National Development Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Now we are eager to take on new challenges that will secure a larger place for Hmongs in the university community. As we strive to introduce students to college, we are also, in turn, introducing universities to our culture. We sincerely hope you will join us in this mission for all the years to come.
