2008 International Scholars Conference (ISC):
"Colorism, Color, Caste and Race "
March 28th and March 31st, 2008

The International Scholars Conference is a truly innovative event. During ISC, scholars analyze an issue prevalent in African American communities and examine its impact on communities of color across the globe.

Colorism, Color, Caste and Race marks the tenth annual conference sponsored by the Institute of African American Research. The Conference will examine international questions of colorism, class, caste, race and affirmative action on March 28 and 31. Prominent scholars will convene to explore social stratifications found in India, Brazil, the United States, the Caribbean, Spanish America and Africa.

Dr. Juanita Merchant, Professor of Internal Medicine and of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, will give the conference keynote address during a luncheon on Day One. Merchant will discuss the pipeline success of women and minorities in the academy and the role of race and affirmative action in these endeavors. The keynote luncheon will be held in the State Dining Room of the Morehead Planetarium on the campus of UNC from 12:30-2 p.m. on Friday, March 28.
