2006 International Scholars Conference (ISC): "Reparations Across the Americas" |
2006 International Scholars Conference (ISC): Co-Sponsored by: Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP). Reparations across the Americas marks the eighth annual conference sponsored by the Institute of African American Research. This year’s conference will include discussions on the national question of reparations, the history of slavery on university campuses, and the Diasporic vision of reparations. Keynote speakers include Roy Brooks from the School of Law at the University of San Diego on Friday afternoon. On Thursday March 30, there will be separate session concerning the Wilmington Race Riots of 1898. Capitalizing on the recent report on the 1898 Wilmington Race Riot, released in early December 2005 by the state Office of Archives and History, we have invited the Race Riot Commission and LaRae Umfleet, the lead historian, to open our conference revealing their findings. The report, now open for public comment, will help to inform recommendations for community response, the commission will make to the legislature in May 2006. Following a presentation of the commission’s report to open the conference, the Institute will present independent research on the economic impact of white riots on Black businesses in Wilmington. To end the day’s discussion, we will have a panel entitled, United States White Riots Revisited and Policy Implications. Scholars will discuss the psychological and physical devastation endured in other race riots nationally and potential policy implications. While this event is free and open to the public, pre-registration is encouraged. For additional information, please contact IAAR Program Coordinator at 919.962.6810. |
