2007 International Scholars Conference (ISC):
"Race and the Environment"
April 2-3, 2007
Cosponsored by: The African Studies Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The International Scholars Conference is a truly innovative event. It provides an opportunity to explore the work of scholars who have done extensive work focused on African American studies specifically and the African Diaspora more generally from their individual cultural perspectives.
Race and the Environment marks the ninth annual conference sponsored by the Institute of African American Research. This year’s conference will include forums for scholars to examine environmental dilemmas through racial contexts, to the extent that minority communities bear a disproportionate burden.
Monday, April 2 will feature general environmental issues such as toxic waste, deforestation, hog farming, activism, and water quality. Presenters will also address apparent conflicts arising from targeted economic development, especially those environmental concerns that pertain to international and black diasporal communities.
Tuesday, April 3 will explore various aspects of the environmental impact of Hurricane Katrina, specifically federal response, disaster management, rebuilding efforts, and racial disparities therein.
Pre-registration is required. For more information, please contact Demetria Howard-Watkins, IAAR Program Coordinator at dhwatkins@unc.edu or (919) 962-0977.
