Basic hydrographic data, (measurements of temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen) are collected weekly from the surface to the bottom of the water column at the mid-river water quality stations as a part of the water quality sampling. This data provides a weekly snapshot of conditions down the center of the Neuse.

Variable weather conditions can cause rapid changes in the hydrography of the Neuse that will be missed by weekly sampling. Therefore, continuous monitoring stations are being used to give minute by minute hydrographic and current velocity data near the surface and bottom of the water column at a limited number of locations down the center of the Neuse.

Mid-river conditions may not be fully reflective of conditions from shore to shore across the Neuse. This is particularly critical for fish kills which may occur when low oxygen water traps fish in marshes, creeks or along the shoreline and prevents their escape into more habitable waters. Therefore, we will be sampling across-river transects weekly to bi-weekly to provide three-dimensional snapshots of conditions throughout the river. This sampling will include current velocity and hydrographic data.
