Bottom sediments play an integral role in the water quality of the Neuse. Specifically, they can be expected to have direct effects on oxygen demand, nutrient dynamics, attenuation of light in the water column and benthic habitat. There is minimal data available on sediment characteristics in the Neuse and therefore sediment samples will be collected along sixteen transect lines across the river. These will be analyzed to provide a map of sediment characteristics in the river that includes size, percent organic content, carbon and nitrogen content and oxygen uptake potential. In addition, diver cores will be taken at a subset of these locations and analyzed to determine benthic animal populations.
