Research Interests:
Biological oceanography, specifically estuarine ecology, phytoplankton ecology, and water quality management.
Education:
Bio:
I am interested in phytoplankton ecology, particularly the effect of light and nutrient uptake on phytoplankton growth, and how differences in the ability to utilize light influence the phytoplankton community structure in different environments. My current research focuses on Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, an invasive, potentially toxic cyanobacteria that has become increasingly predominant in a variety of freshwater and estuarine systems, like the St. Johns River, Florida and Currituck Sound, North Carolina. The goal of my research is to determine the factors that make an environment susceptible to C. raciborskii invasion, in the hopes of creating a management strategy that will protect these susceptible water bodies from the proliferation of this species.
