Phytoplankton/microbial ecology

Bio:
I am a Master's student studying picophytoplankton ecology in the Neuse River Estuary. It is widely accepted that picoplankton dominate the autotrophic biomass of open ocean systems, while larger phytoplankton are more abundant in increasingly eutrophic, coastal waters. The smaller size fraction has, therefore, received little attention. However, recent studies in estuaries, including the Neuse, indicate that picoplankton can become a dominant component of the phytoplankton community during certain seasons and conditions. My research currently involves characterizing the spatial and temporal variation of picoplankton in the Neuse.
