The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources in conjunction with Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Science (UNC- IMS), and the NC-DOT Ferry Division commissioned the FerryMon project. In 2006, Albemarle Sound and FerryMon were chosen as one of the CUAHSI WATERS test bed sites. In conjunction with this, the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Environmental Engineering & Technology (EET) Program granted FerryMon funds to enhance real-time detection and quantification of key water quality indicators, and improve data management and outreach capabilities.
