The
North River, NC, presents a strong gradient in water-column
attenuation over a short distance. To monitor water
quality within this tidally dominated submerged river
basin, monthly water samples will be taken at a total
of 9 stations (Table 1).
3 regions along gradient
-Upper, Middle, Lower
-Only middle region has seagrass
3 Stns per region (red circles)
-Sampled 1 day/mo.
-Water - chl a/TSS
-LiCor+YSI profile (0.5m inc.)
1 Permanent Stn per region
(blue circles)
-Sample each quarter for a month
-Dec 02, Mar., Jun., Sept. 03
-LiCor and YSI (1m depth)

A
100ml sample is taken for nutrient analysis on a Lachat
(Ammonia, Nitrates, Phosphate). A 2L sample is collected
to run through the Wetlabs AC-9 and collect other parameters.
On the same day as the samples are collected, they are
filtered for chlorophylls (50 mls x2), which are frozen
and later analyzed by fluorescence. On the following
day the samples are run thru the AC-9, and then filtered
for color (C-DOM = 30 mls x2), particle absorption (PA
= 200 mls x2), and turbidity (TSS = 500mls x2). The
PA and C-DOM are frozen until later analysis. TSS is
determined by dry weight (60ºC to constant weight),
and ashed dry weight (500ºC x 4hrs).
In addition we collect
light profiles (PAR) using a 4Pi Li-Cor sensor at 0.5m
depth intervals to the bottom. We also collect a simultaneous
water-quality profile using YSI-6600, which records
temperature, salinity, D.O., pH, turbidity (NTU), and
chlorophyll fluorescence (ug/L chl).
