Dr. Charles H. "Pete" Peterson heads the Interdisciplinary Marine Conservation Ecology Laboratory at IMS. Dr. Peterson has been on the faculty of the University of North Carolina since 1978, conducting research primarily in coastal North Carolina and teaching on campus in Chapel Hill as well as at IMS. During the height of the field season in summer, his laboratory often contains 50 or more researchers, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate and high-school interns, research technicians, volunteers, and research facilitators. There is substantial collaboration with faculty and students from other institutions, which commonly involves visitors on short- or long-term study leaves. There is substantial international collaboration, involving especially Australia, Japan, Canada, South Africa, and South Korea.
