ELIGIBILITY
An REU participant must:
1 – be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions
2 – be enrolled as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree (students must be on-track to return to a baccalaureate program after their REU experience so graduating seniors are not eligible).
3 – not have participated in any REU program before.
REU students will develop a research plan, conduct their proposed work, prepare project summaries, and give an oral presentation by the end of the program; consequently preference will be given to applicants with at least two years of undergraduate experience, relevant course instruction in the sciences, and evidence of motivation. Prior research experience is not required or expected. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Students matriculating at institutions with limited undergraduate research opportunities are encouraged to apply.
APPLICATION
We are accepting applications now!
The deadline for receipt of completed applications is February 24, 2012. Students will be notified starting on March 1 and can accept or reject offers starting March 15. The following statement is from the NSF Ocean Science Program office and pertains to all Ocean Science funded REU sites: “All students who are offered a position at this REU Site have until March 15th or later to accept or reject the offer. Any student who is asked to accept or reject an offer prior to March 15th should contact the Division of Ocean Science's REU Program Director, Lisa Rom at < elrom@NSF.gov > or 703-292-7709."
Application Procedure and Requirements:
Applications are evaluated based on three critical components. Incomplete applications are not considered. All of the following application materials should be sent to the REU contact.
1) The completed application form written by the applicant.
2) Two letters of recommendation.
3) The most recent official transcript from the academic institution you attend.
Applicants should be in good standing with their home institution. Each letter of recommendation should be from an individual who can comment on your commitment to conduct self-motivated projects. Letters of recommendation will be weighted heavily in your evaluation.
Applications can be submitted by surface mail or e-mail to the REU contact listed below. To use surface mail download the two pdf files, print hardcopies, fill them out, and mail. To use e-mail download the MS Word forms, fill them out, and e-mail them as attachments.
