Thursday, September 1st, 2011 5:30 PM Student Union Room 2511
Dear Prospective Volunteer:
You
are invited to make a difference in the lives of young people in our
area! Read on to find out how you can have fun, give back to your
community, and potentially change the life of a student in either
elementary, middle, and high schools.
Consider
volunteering as part of INSPIRE, a new student initiative from UNC-CH
designed to improve science education in North Carolina.
Imagine. This semester, you could be volunteering on a weekly basis in
schools where you would be performing science experiments, teaching
classes of elementary, middle, or high school students, and making
a difference.
You
will be
partnered with an area science teacher and will go at least once a week
to teach
a science mini-lesson, help with field trips, or assist the teacher in
teaching
science to kids.
This
program
will provide some great experience for you and will also be a great
resume
booster.
Unfortunately,
there are limited spots for this program. Competitive candidates
will demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and a genuine interest in
education. We will evaluate your application and we may ask you to sign
up for an interview.
The students whom we select will need to take this very seriously and
maintain their responsibilities throughout the
semester.
Interested? Follow these steps:
- Decide whether you are willing to put in a sizable amount
of
effort to this program. In one semester it is required that you spend
at least 10 weeks (approximately 2 - 3 hours/ week) in your respective
school. Also, we will ask all volunteers to maintain a journal where
they can briefly describe their experiences.
- Come to a information session (Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 5:30 PM at Student Union Room 3411 or Thursday, September 1st, 2011 5:30 PM at Student Union 2511).
- Download this application form and submit by Wednesday, September 7th at 11:59 PM (Follow the instructions at the bottom of the application for submission.
