Recognized as one of America’s “cultural resources worthy of preservation,” The Carolina Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The inn was built by John Sprunt Hill, a UNC graduate who, in 1935, gave it to the University to serve as “a cheerful inn for visitors, a town hall for the state, and a home for returning sons and daughters of alma mater.” But who knew the inn was the place to discover some of North Carolina’s best bluegrass bands? One of the most popular sites in North Carolina for banquets, weddings, business meetings and academic conferences is also hugely popular for Fridays on the Porch. From April to October, locals and out-of-towners unwind from the week with this live bluegrass series that floods the front lawn with good people and fills the air with the songs of the South.
