26 Sep 2007 - Calling all VPs
Please note that if you're planning on attending the Vice Presidents' Committee meeting tomorrow, the location has changed. We'll now be meeting in New West 103 to plan the upcoming Field Day and Obento events.
Sorry for the lack of listserv e-mails lately; my e-mail has been acting up. I will attempt to get an e-mail sent out tonight though!

The meeting information, calendar, and events sections of the site have been updated, so be sure to check them for latest club information.
Hope to see you tomorrow!

13 Sep 2007 - Shadow Warrior!
The calendar and meeting info pages have been updated! Japan Club has also been renewed as an official university student organization for the 2007-2008 school year!

So, for our first event meeting on September 20th, we'll be showing Akira Kurosawa's Kagemusha and serving curry rice. The film is in Japanese with English subtitles. You can read a little more about it on the meeting info page. Time and location are also on the meeting info page.

We'll also be having another language table meeting on September 24th, same time same place as the last one, and we'll be having our first Vice Presidents' Meeting on September 27th. Please look for more info on those over the next week.

30 Aug 2007 - Welcome Back!
Welcome back to UNC-CH, or simply just welcome if you're just now joining us! What took you so long? ^^~

Aratake-sensei, Sarrin, and I are really excited that you're interested in Japan Club, and we can't wait to get things started. Our first club interest meeting will be on Thursday, September 6th at 5:00pm, in New West 219. There will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting for joining our super duper e-mail listserv. We'll also be serving onigiri, so please come ready to snack!

Our second club interest meeting... well, there isn't one, so if you can't make the meeting but you'd still like to get e-mails from us, please send me an e-mail at sbmoore@email.unc.edu and I'll add you to the list.

While Japan Club has been mainly a culture club for the last years, this year with the help of Jan Bardsley we're branching out into previously neglected UNC-CH Japanese language land! The Japanese Language Table will meet on occassional Mondays this semester, starting on September 10th at 4:00pm. The language table will meet in Hanes Art Center 215.

Hope to see you all at the interest meeting!

05 Mar 2007 - Kurosawa and White Day
We are having a meeting on March 8, this Thursday, and it'll be in Gardner 08. We'll be watching a Kurosawa movie and eating White Day treats (although White Day isn't for another week, don't worry, we know).

After Spring Break, there will be an ikebana workshop which is capped at 15 people. Please e-mail me if you'd like to attend that.

See you on Thursday and if I don't, have a good Spring Break!

12 Feb 2007 - Change of Plans (Again?!)
This year the phrase "Japan Club" seems to be synonomous with "last minute changes" but you know what, that's okay, because the last minute changes bring cool things. The updated schedule for this Thursday, the 15th, is as follows:
6:00pm - Free Pizza in New West 219
7:00pm - Ms. Cannon begins her talk (she may begin a little bit before 7, so make sure you're there on time!
8:00pm - Bowling at the Student Union

Ms. Cannon is a professional translator and interpreter for such events as business negotiations, corporate audits, presentations. Her main areas of specialty are finance, especially cross-border mergers & acquisitions, environmental issues, and foreign relations. She's going to talk to us about making a living by doing translating work. She's also an associate professor at Meikai Daigaku, so I'm sure she'll be quite informative, interesting, and effective at transmitting knowledge to us at the same time! (Professors are really wonderful like that.)

So yes, New West room 219. (That's the building the Asian Studies department is in now. It's across the street from Memorial Hall and the door facing Memorial Hall should be unlocked for sure. Go up the central steps, make a left, and the room is right before the other steps that lead to the 3rd floor.)
See you there!

P.S. The upcoming meeting info and the calendar pages have been updated.

8 Feb 2007 - Sushi and Bowling!
Next Thursday, as briefly mentioned at the Tonkatsu Party, Feb 15th, we'll be having a non-official Japan Club meeting. AKA for anyone who wants to come hang out we'll be descending on Kurama at 6:00pm and then going bowling at the Underground in the basement of the student union. Bowling is decently popular in Japan, but it's much, much more expensive than it is here. That might be because they have high tech cameras which zoom in on the pins as your ball (hopefully) knocks them down, or it might be because of the outrageous rent prices in cities. Only the bowling alley owners can know for sure.

The following Thursday, Feb 22nd, we'll be back to our regularly scheduled culture programs. If all goes according to plan (knock on wood), we'll have someone to show off different types of kimono and while we munch on cute snacks of some kind. Watch your e-mail or this site for a room announcement later this next week.

And finally, thanks to everyone who joined the club at the Tonkatsu party! Your names will be added to our members page as soon as Dena e-mails them to me. We love you Dena!

P.S. Here is an interesting story about a Japanese lady who tried to kill her husband with a bowling ball. The bowling poster pictured under the story caption is quite awesome too.

25 Jan 2007 - Tonkatsu Party!
As sent out on the listserv, we're holding a tonkatsu party at Aratake-sensei's house on February 2nd, at 7:00pm. Tonkatsu looks like this:

The above image can be found alongside a recipe here.

Tonkatsu consists of fried pork cutlet, and as you can see, it's quite a tasty dish. Remember how much fun the okonomiyaki party was? Think of this event as being like that one, but with fried goodness. If you're going to attend the party, please let me know via e-mail by January 31st. Hope to see you there!

13 Nov 2006 - Tea Ceremony News Flash Redux
There's been a room change (go figure) for the tea ceremony. We will now be meeting today, at 6:00pm in Graham Memorial 039. This room is in the basement of the building so you'll need to take the stairs or elevator to get to it. Minna-san, ganbatte kudasai.
The meeting will be worth it! I promise!

12 Nov 2006 - Tea Ceremony News Flash
We finally have a room for tomorrow's meeting! We'll be having a tea ceremony in New West 219 at 6:00pm on the 13th of November.
The event is completely free, so come out with interest, questions, and a thirsty state of mind.
Hope to see you there, and I hope you're not as bogged down with school work as I am. Yuck.

26 Oct 2006 - Movie Night
The VP List has been updated. Thanks to the people who showed up to help plan!
For the next meeting we're having a movie night. Which movie are we watching? You'll have to come to help us pick! Our lovely VPs narrowed our choices down to Ringu and Spirited Away so it'll either be one or the other. We'll also have tons of Halloween snacks, so please come to help us dispose of all of them. If you're not a member, you have three choices for disposing of said snacks: become a member by giving Kelvin your $10 for club dues; bring $3 for the one-time meeting fee; or wear a Halloween costume! These snacks will be worth it---there are even rumors of muffins floating around between the thoughts of candy and popcorn.
P.S. Gardner 08 is in the basement of the building. Quite creepy if you ask me...

20 Oct 2006 - First VP Planning Meeting
I finally updated the member list, so if you've paid your dues, but you are not on the list of the 36 privilaged, please e-mail me.
On another note, it's time for our first Vice Presidents' (formerly known as Idea Committee) Planning meeting on Monday! Yes, Monday, Oct 23, 2006 at 6:00pm in Hanes Art Center Room 215, you too can become a Vice President of Japan Club! We'll be picking a movie for the next general club meeting (which will be held on Oct 30) and probably a few more meetings to come. Come help us out! Again, 6:00pm, Monday, HA Center 215.
I think that's it for now. Yup, that's it. 'Til next time!

07 Oct 2006 - Mochi's in the moon!
This Monday, October 9th, we'll be meeting in Gardner 08 at 6:00pm before traveling outside as a collective group to view the moon for our annual Otsukimi party. After taking in the oh-so-round (well, maybe a little lopsided as it is waning) orb that fills the night sky with light, we'll be holding our haiku competion (English and Japanese entries accepted) and eating some absolutely tasty omochi. (O)mochi are sticky sweets made out of pounded rice, and they're traditionally served at holidays and at moon viewing parties like ours. It's rumored that the rabbit in the moon has given Aratake-sensei its own recipe for mochi, so ours is sure to be some of the best around. Don't miss it!

27 Sep 2006 - A Meeting Place! JOY!
After much vexation and bartering with different departments, we finally have a place to meet tomorrow; we'll be in Peabody 104 (click here for a map to this location) and we're planning to start the meeting right on time at 6:00pm. Be there or be a pair of chopsticks.
Again, 6:00pm, Sep 28th, Peabody 104. We'll be participating in presentions about Japanese daily life and traditions seen through the eyes of our lovely resident exchange students and UNC-CH students who have been to Japan in the past for study abroad or just whimsical travel.
Make announcements in your classes (especially your Japanese classes), bring friends, and don't forget your $3 for food as you'll definitely be wanting some of that scrumptious curry rice.
Instead of the $3, you could also bring $10 and become an official member of the club --- you won't have to pay again for food for the rest of the academic year, and you'll get your name added to our new spiffy members list.
See you tomorrow at the meeting!

23 Sep 2006 - There's a site again!
Welcome to the all new and all improved Japan Club at UNC-CH website! The only sections of the site which are actually up at the moment are the two about pages but, if you really want to click all those links, you can see all of the placeholder pages for pages that we will have up before the end of October. Some sections will be up faster than others (Members and Meetings get priority over Connections) and certain pages will be up later than others because of yet-undetermined meeting spaces. Let's just settle for it'll all be here eventually.
Look out for a listserv e-mail over the next couple of days to announce where our next meeting will be, and check back here eventually to see all our neat information.
Until then, stay cool, eat lots of sushi (but stay away from the odoriebi!), and mark your calendar for our next meeting on Sep 28th at 6:00pm. We'll be chowing down on delicious curry rice and learning about everyday life from our wonderful exchange students and friends who have just toured the country. Believe me, you won't want to miss it!
