Mukashi, mukashi (in 1999) a mysteriously unknown student (if you're this person or you know who this person is, please e-mail us so we can credit them) decided that UNC-CH needed a Japanese conversation club. As that long ago year went on, more and more of the club's members discovered that they were really interested in learning more about Japanese culture, not just practicing their language skills.
After the dark ages of 2000 (when there was no club), Noriko Satake and Aratake-sensei joined forces to create SUSHI (the Society of Undergrad Students witH Interest [in Japan]) in 2001, the mighty predecessor to today's Japan Club. In 2003, under the leadership of Will Craige, a vote was held and the club's name was changed simply to Japan Club.
Through the help of other great presidents, Japan Club has continued to grow and develop into today's organization that gives both Japanese and American students the opportunity to explore each other's cultures and the Japanese language.
Starting this year we will hold two different types of main club meetings---culture meetings and language tables. Language tables meet on Mondays once or twice a month and culture meetings will take place on Thursday evenings twice a month. |
