Advising
Promote an Academic Advising Fair
Jasmin will give students the opportunity to meet different advisors face to face and get their information, learn how to navigate the advising system—both the building and the website—and get motivation to make more proactive decisions about their academic career at Carolina. The Academic Advising Fair will serve as a way to help encourage students to see their advisors more consistently and improve the relationship and image between academic advising and students.
Improve the Course Search Engine on Student Central by creating an option that will allow students to find cross-over courses
The revised Course Search Engine aims to allow students to search for coursees that cover more than one requirement/approach/connection at one time. The goal of this change is to allow students a way to search for courses that fulfill multiple graduation requirements, and make the process of course search more convenient overall.
Push for the Course Search Engine and department sites to include course descriptions in the undergraduate bulletin and syllabi from the past semesters
Jasmin aims to give students the ability to have access to the expectations of a course before they sign up for it. Furthermore, providing syllabi at this earlier state gives students the means by which to make stronger academic decisions concerning the courses they choose to take and the level of preparation they will need in order to be successful.
Work with academic departments of liberal arts majors to create more opportunities for students to work with research projects and/or internship opportunities for more exposure in the field of study they plan to have a career in
Jasmin recognizes the limited number of opportunities currently available for students pursuing majors in the departments other than those in the sciences. Creating more undergraduate research opportunities for these students will allow students to get experience in their given field of study and aid them in discovering their interests and passions early on in their Carolina careers. Additionally, Jasmin hopes that creating these opportunities will make Carolina students more competitive when entering the job market.
Evaluate the use and value of the “Honors Contract” option for honors courses
Jasmin wants to help increase the awareness and use of the Honors Contract available for honors students to help increase their honors course options. This will also help to encourage more students to apply for honors courses their sophomore year because of the increased flexibility of course options.
Build-up and promote the pre-graduate advising program
Jasmin wants to give students the opportunity to meet with graduate students to learn about and begin their post-graduate moves towards graduate school. They will be able to meet with grad students who are knowledgeable of the graduate application process and the field of study the student is interested in.
Follow-up on the Academic Advising goals of the Raynor Administration to ensure that the work that has been started will be continued and built upon
Jasmin recognizes the accomplishments of the Raynor Administration, and hopes to continue those programs that were most effective. Such programs include the continued promotion of student designed academic clusters, the sustained effort to support the expansion of the C-START program to include Juniors, and the recognition of outstanding, undergraduate faculty.
Conduct a campus wide survey focused on the best classroom learning methods that students enjoy and can learn from better
Jasmin wants students to provide feedback on effective classroom teaching techniques in order to improve their classroom experience. Carolina honors academic freedom to the professors; therefore this survey would serve as student suggestions on how to teach to a range of different learning styles. Students need to enjoy and get the most out of their classroom experience and faculty should be aware of this.
Arts on Campus
Promote student involvement in the arts by encouraging professors to communicate course-relevant Memorial Hall performances via course syllabi, the blackboard website, and course emailing
Jasmin wants professors to encourage students to attend more Memorial Hall performances that are relevant to course focus. This will allow students to enjoy classroom experiences by including the arts as a component to the lesson. Professors will be able to use this collaboration as a tool to increase student interest in the classroom.
Create an Arts Festival for the major departments and buildings that have art exhibits such as Hanes Art Center, the Student Union, the Stone Center, and the Ackland Museum to increase the visibility of art on campus
The purpose of this initiative is to allow students to see the role that the arts play both within the Carolina community, as well as in the world at large. Jasmin hopes to achieve this vision by promoting the partnership between these different settings to increase the presence and excitement surrounding the arts on campus. Jasmin envisions a themed project that ties together the missions of each venue together into a single artistic endeavor.
Collaborate with student organizations on campus to host Student Arts Forums
Jasmin wants to gather students who are involved or interested in the arts to come together to speak out about their concerns and ideas about the arts on campus. This will be a useful opportunity for dialogue surrounding how Carolina can improve support for the arts on campus.
Make students more aware of performances on campus and encourage their attendance. She plans to do so by creating a comprehensive arts package. This package will include a map of campus performance locations, student pricing and discounts for tickets, and alternative student entertainment
The importance of this proposal lies in maintaining the quality and frequency of campus performances. Additionally, it is imperative that students make the greatest use of campus resources. Furthermore, Jasmin hopes this arts package will encourage students to take charge of their own well-rounded educations.
Build a task force to encourage the establishment of Dance as an officially recognized academic major
Jasmin supports a task force officially recognized by the Office of the Chancellor and will consist of faculty, staff, and students. This group will evaluate the feasibility of introducing the Dance major.
Create opportunities for art majors to get involved in the Chapel Hill community. She will work through the Arts Department and the School of Education to connect Carolina students with the art programs of local schools
Jasmin wants students majoring in the arts to give their talents back to the community. They will be able to do so by working with younger students to help them develop their knowledge and participation in the arts.
Carolina Advocacy
Work with campus political groups to publicize updates on local, state-wide, and national legislation that are relative to student interest and concern
Jasmin understands that students are citizens and have the right to participate in the political system. This is a great opportunity to work with campus political organizations to keep students abreast of the changes that are currently being implemented by the government. We will do this through using different campus resources to promote messages that are informative and students can become more involved.
Make students more aware of State Representatives
State representatives affect our lives as students at Carolina dealing with our education and our university’s budget. This is important because the votes on legislation done by state representatives can affect our future as students at Carolina. It is better to get students familiar, connected, and involved in the political process that takes place throughout the year, in order to be a part of building a better Carolina.
Help out-of-state students understand rights on participating in political activities in Chapel Hill and in their own cities
Jasmin wants to help out-of-state students know that they can participate in the North Carolina political process. They can qualify as a residence in different ways according to their location on or off-campus. Also to help educating students on how to access and use absentee votes in order to give back to their own community
Host forums with the political and special interest groups on campus to discuss controversial legislation such as the Dream Act
Jasmin wants to for students to have the opportunity to learn and discuss important legislation that affect our lives as students and citizens such as the Dream Act and the gentrification in the Northside community. She wants to students to become engaged with the decisions of our representatives and ensure that they are representative of us and the Chapel Hill community.
Diversity
Develop a diversity education team comprised of university offices and student organizations to host programs together covering diversity topics
Jasmin will work with the university offices on campus to do diversity programs with student organizations in their own meetings or around campus. This team will focus helping students to further understand and become familiar with cultures, lifestyles, religion, and others to help open up their perspective of their Carolina community.
Promote the “Orange Band Project” focused on creating dialogue on campus between all students
The Orange Band Project will require student participants to wear an orange band in a visible place serving as an open invitation for dialogue with other participants. The orange band has a special meaning to each individual student. Students are encouraged to ask one another “what does your orange band mean to you?” This will create healthy, diverse dialogue between students on campus
Work with the Inter-Faith Council and student organizations to celebrate a variety traditional customs on religious holidays that will bring together students of all faiths
The Inter-Faith Council and student government will bring together students of all faiths to celebrate the diversity of the religious community on campus. Jasmin wants to make an effort towards all students to participate in this event because it will give them understanding and new perspectives of the religious practices and beliefs outside of their own.
Host Mix-It-Up Day with the Carolina Dining Services
Mix-It-Up Day is collaboration between the student government and the Campus Y during Race Relations Week. It is a night in the Rams Head Dining Hall where student volunteers work to encourage Carolina students to eat dinner and participate in a diversity activity that facilitates discussion amongst various students about what diversity means to them. It allows students to have open dialogue about their perspective on diversity in their lives and on this campus.
Host the Diversity Forum focusing on the UNC Diversity Plan
The Diversity forum serves as a way for the university administration to inform students about the diversity goals implemented under Chancellor Moeser. These goals were set to achieve excellence at all levels of this university. The Diversity Plan does quantitative and qualitative assessment of the university’s success of having a presence of diversity in all communities. This forum allows students to voice their feelings and concerns about diversity at Carolina.
Create a Diversity Celebration Day. This celebration will include a mural of pictures depicting the varying array of Carolina students present on campus, and highlighting the ways in which they are all tied to Carolina
The mural will be an artistic symbol highlighting the connection that exists amongst student communities at Carolina. Jasmin hopes that this project will be celebrated annually. Jasmin believes that the project will see overwhelmingly positive student response—affirming Carolina’s passion and love for diversity. Participation in this event will be offered as a campus-wide opportunity through collaboration with student organizations.
Host “The Myth-Buster Series” with Carolina United and Campus Y
The Myth-Buster Series will be a joint collaboration with the Campus Y Carolina United to invite two or three student organizations to come together and discuss societal topics for a week. This project will help to facilitate healthy dialogue amongst Carolina students about topics that affect people everyday. This project will allow student organizations to share similar or opposing perspectives about the different topics, creating an opportunity for students to expand their understandings of different aspects of life of life for other people.
Environment
Arrange a green initiative with the businesses located on Franklin Street
The businesses on Franklin Street play a large role on campus, and it is for this reason that it is imperative that their input be included in conversations surrounding issues of student life. Jasmin will encourage businesses to contribute to building a better environment for Chapel Hill. She will encourage the use of less packaging from vendors for those products sold on campus, encourage businesses to make recycling and composting regular options for their patrons, and promote their involvement in dialogue of sustainability and conservation on campus.
Encourage Professors to exercise efficient paper management
Paper waste on campus has proven a significant issue. Jasmin will look to decrease the amount of paper wasted in classes by asking professors make use of the blackboard site to make important documents available and viewable without the need for printing. Furthermore, Jasmin will encourage professors to ask students to use more restrictive margin and font sizes that result in the use of less paper. She hopes this will decrease the overall consumption of paper throughout the academic year, which will help save resources and money.
Build campus collaboration on the issue of sustainability
Environmental issues have proven to be of great significance to students, faculty, and staff, as well as those within the community. This is evidenced by the great number of groups focusing on these issues in the Carolina community. Jasmin would like to support the continued conversation amongst these groups and work to consolidate their efforts. She hopes this will help build a stronger alliance in order to make major steps towards building a green campus for Carolina from the student perspective.
Encourage students to use less energy and water
Each student has the power to affect the energy expenditure and resource usage on campus. Jasmin wants to help students to realize the impact that each of them has, and to encourage them to make the most of their influence. Jasmin would like to encourage students to take shorter showers, turn off the lights in their suites/rooms when they are not required, and attempt to use less paper. Additionally, Jasmin would like to team with the Residence Hall Association By recognizing their impact, Jasmin hopes students can work together to lower both the energy expenditure as well as the overall expense of the university.

Jasmin hopes to host the “Go-Green for Green” kick-off for the week’s events to get students more interested in becoming involved in Environmental Week. Jasmin hopes to attract a more diverse student base to these events, and help more students to recognize how these issues touch everyone in the Carolina community. This would provide an opportunity for environmental groups to outreach to the student body in creative ways and encourage their participation and accountability.
Create incentives for students living (and venturing) off campus to use mass transit as opposed to driving a personal vehicle to minimize gasoline emissions
Jasmin will make an effort to encourage more students to use other options of transportation such as bicycles, public transit, and walking, in order to contribute to the university’s initiatives to make a more sustainable campus. The use of mass transit has several benefits to the campus community. Decreasing the number of cars on the road decreases the per-mile difference in emissions between bus travel and car travel. In addition, it keeps our roads more clear and thus keeps the streets safer.
Global University
Create an International Student Leadership Program. The intent of this program is to provide international student participants a chance to gain strong leadership skills, as well as the means to use those skills to become more actively engaged on campus
Jasmin recognizes the value in a diversity of viewpoints, and encourages its incorporation into all areas of Carolina. It is for this reason that she hopes to encourage international students to become involved throughout the campus community. She hopes to help the international student community to find its greatest strengths, and to apply them to their newly developed skill sets.
Promote the Global Center by helping to publicize the events, the calendar, and the listserv
The Global Center offers a way for students to gain an international perspective from offering many educational, entertaining programs produced by student organizations and guests. Carolina students can access this experience by joining into this initiative to help students get more connected to the center. This will also help student organization gain recognition and support for their work dedicated to international causes.
Work with the Office of Study Abroad to build better communication between past, current, and prospective study abroad students to access and evaluate their study abroad experience and program
Jasmin wants to help students to have access to personal experience on the study abroad programs that they are interested in by having the contact information to previous study abroad students. This will allow students to have the resources make a decision about their study abroad experience.

Jasmin wants to encourage students to look beyond nation-wide internship and job opportunities by looking at international opportunities. This will offer a larger variety of choices for students gain more work and worldly experiences at the same time.
Make an event that represents the international presence that exists in Chapel Hill, through the students, professors, workers, and community
Jasmin will work with student organizations, academic departments and building to produce a campus-wide program that will represent the international presence that exists on campus and where UNC is present around the world. This will help students to see the work that UNC does around the world and the opportunity for them to be a part of this global outreach in their own ways.
Graduate Students
Work with the Point- to-Point transportation to expand the locations that the service can be provided in order to help more undergraduate and graduate students to get home safely
Jasmin knows that there are many students that are not able to use the P2P to get to certain locations after dark due to area restrictions for on and off campus residence. She will work with undergraduate students, graduate students, and the Department of Public safety to evaluate the current locations of service and either expand or revise it in order to serve more students.
Connect and engage more graduate students to participate in campus events through providing more resources about student activities on campus
Graduate student pay student fees in order to have activities and concerts on campus and they should be well-informed about these events. This will be collaboration between the student government, student organizations, and the graduate student government in order to build the communication between these communities.

This will be an opportunity to bring together students, professors, graduate students, and postdoctoral students to speak on behalf for women in the Sciences in order to encourage more female students to pursue the science field.
Greeks
Work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to create a webpage for Greek organizations to load pictures from their service projects and submit completed blogs
This webpage will allow students a way to witness the contributions that the Greek community makes both on and off campus. This website will aid in Greek recruitment as well as serve as a means by which to connect to former alumni. Jasmin believes this initiative will promote the continuation of Greek work in the community as well as create excitement among students for philanthropy on campus.
Work with Greek organizations to collaborate on a Greek Homecoming Parade
This parade will be modeled as a fundraising event. Participation in the parade will include a small entrance fee and welcome both current members as well as their alumni to attend and walk in the parade. The aim of each organization will be to have the greatest number of members present and to collect the greatest amount in their fundraising efforts. All of the money collected will be divided between the Eve Carson Memorial Fund and a charity of the winning organization’s choice. This event will be a representation of Greek unity on campus.
Plan with Greek organizations to hold Inter-Council Greek Diversity events
These events will be social events on campus with various Greek organizations. This will allow Greeks the opportunity to meet one another and learn more about the purposes and goals of the organizations outside of their prospective councils. This will be a great networking experience and will help facilitate more Greek events to be visible on campus. This will be strictly for Greek-affiliated members only.
Work with Greek organizations to hold forums on different topics concerning Greek life at Carolina
Jasmin wants to help create a positive image for the purpose of Greek organizations on campus and their contribution to student life. This forum series will be a different from most because the Greeks will work together in their different councils to have a representative involved in the program planning and participation. This is a simple way to create Greek unity and will help bring different students and their perspectives together.
Work with the Greek Councils to promote Green initiatives for Greeks: Green Week with the Greeks
Jasmin envisions this program to be centered on friendly competition between Greek organizations to resemble the “Green Games” between the residence halls on campus. The councils will design the competition and help with promoting and participating in the event. This will be a way for the Greek community to connect more with the Green events that happen within the residence halls, showing their efforts in creating a Green campus for Carolina.
Evaluate the feasibility of on-campus meeting space for Greek organizations
This will provide a consistent meeting place for Greek organizations that do not have houses and/or want a place to meet on campus. Jasmin would like to provide these organizations with the privilege of using campus facilities as meeting space.
LGBTQ
Support ways to help connect high school LGBTQ organizations with Carolina’s LGBTQ organizations for high school recruitment to show that Carolina is open for all communities
Jasmin wants to make an outreach to the local high schools to work with the LGBTQ Office and student organizations to show that Carolina is an open community. This will allow Carolina students to serve as special recruiters for high school students and increase their interest in Carolina.
Provide the option for those who are safe zoned trained to join a list of safe zoned trained students, faculty, and staff for students to use a confidential ally
Jasmin wants to begin offering a way for students to have many ways to communicate with an ally when necessary. She will work with the LGBTQ Office to develop the best way to construct this list so that is confidential for both parties, but serves the needs of interested students.
Promote Gay Rights activities like speakers and interactive discussions on campus for all students
Jasmin wants to help bring more attention to the gay rights issues that are happening across the nation. This initiative will help students become more informed about the progress and the struggles of the fight for gay rights in America. This will help groups begin to work together in order to have successful events on campus by having co-sponsors to gather more support from students
Increase the publicity for all student government activities and initiatives in order for students to stay updated with the administrations goals through having a student government listserv
Jasmin wants to ensure that all students who interested in the work that is being done through this administration will always be well informed of the weekly/monthly. She believes that this will create more transparency for the goals that this administration has set
Work with student television to create ways for student organizations to promote their events on the station while shows are not being aired to allow more publicity for student events
Jasmin believes that this would be an excellent avenue to allow student organizations to publicize their events. They could create a Power Point slide that looks a flyer and they will compiled into a slide show that resemble commercials. There a lot of opportunities for student organizations and student television to collaborate to help publicity for all organizations.
Create a Public Relations Team for the Student Government
Jasmin wants to help reach out to the student body in creative ways to make the work of the student government visible. This team will create flyers, a-frames, pit events, and more ways to build communication from the student body to the student government
Public Service
Continue to hold the “STRETCH Conference”
This is an annual conference that allows students to come together to discover the many ways that students can give back to the community and the world, starting now. This is a great way to learn about the great number of resources available for students on campus, and allows students to learn about the achievements of their peers.
Create an opportunity for Public service at Carolina between faculty, staff, and students
Jasmin wants this service project to require input from the Faculty Council and student-service organizations on campus. The two constituencies will work together to determine the most effective manner by which to obtain the interest and participation needed to make this project successful.
Remain committed to participation in the Public Service Week by producing programs and promoting events with collaborative groups involved.
Public Service Week focuses on the service that is done on Carolina’s campus by the students, faculty, staff, and community. This is a way to get students involved in service activities, and bring together the campus in a joint, unified effort. Past Public Service Weeks have been comprised of unique projects that have proven successful and provided meaningful contributions to the community, and Jasmin will work to continue this work during her term.
Organize a Disaster Relief Team and work to raise funds in conjunction with other campus organizations in order to respond to major disasters and tragedies around the nation and the world.
Jasmin is extremely passionate about mobilizing the student body, and encouraging her peers to recognize our shared connections. This initiative is intended as a means of meeting current national and international needs in times of major crisis. This will be one of the many ways Jasmin hopes to connect Carolina’s students to the global community. Funds will be sought after through various University resources as well as those within the community.
Continue the efforts for addressing homelessness in Chapel Hill which involves skill trainings in technology and language
Jasmin wants students to be a part of making a difference in the lives of the people of Chapel Hill. We will work with student organizations that provide the services that are needed such as Fighting Against Digital Divide to ensure that student government continues to contribute to the cause.
Continue to support the Brown Bag Lunch Series.
The Brown Bag Lunch Series is intended as an opportunity for students to meet with and learn more about various national service organizations in order to learn more about the organizations themselves. In the past, such organizations have included Teach For America, The Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps. Events such as these help students to discover their passions and discover possible career and post-graduation options.
Safety
Create a program designed to make male allies for interpersonal violence prevention
It is imperative that the University act to take the next steps to prevent violence against students on campus and to create a safer community for all students and residence. Jasmin hopes to encourage male students on campus to take an active role in this process. Having male allies will increase bystander intervention when sexual or physical abuse is taking place. Furthermore, involving our male students in the discussion of safety helps to reinforce the idea that we are all impacted by acts of violence on campus. This creates an opportunity for male and female students to fight against sexual and physical abuse.
Create a “Safe Buddy” brochure that will introduce new ways to be safe on campus
Jasmin wants to create more update-to-date and relevant ways to remain safe on and off campus. This will have more accurate information that students can practice and use for themselves.
Make sure that students have readied access safety information
Safety on campus can be improved by helping students to be better informed and aware of their surroundings. Maps of common crime spots in Chapel Hill and safe routes to get home for off-campus students should be regularly distributed to students. Jasmin will work with the Department of Public Safety to develop a Carolina Safety Packet that will highlight the areas on campus identified as “high-crime” in order to make wiser, more informed safety decisions.
Make progress with establishing lighting on campus
Jasmin wants to continue regular lighting tours on campus in hopes that the town of Chapel Hill will begin plans on improving lighting throughout the city, especially in the areas most frequented by crime. Jasmin also wants the University to make an initiative on improving the lighting in unlit areas on campus that have a great deal of student traffic at night. She recognizes that lighting is an enormous expense and is difficult to fund, but she refuses to allow the sacrifice of safety for cost.
Reverse P2P
The P2P has proven a regularly frequented and positive addition to campus safety. There are ways to improve its role on campus, however. The most significant is by implementing a reverse P2P system that runs the opposite direction of the current P2P route. This will help to reduce overcrowding on the P2P, take students to their locations faster, and serve a greater number of students with little strain to university resources.
Special Projects
Incoming First-Years
Create the “First-Year Experience Program” for all incoming first-year students
This program will focus on getting the basic college skills such as time management and college-level study skills to incoming first years through utilizing first-year seminar classes to promote and encourage this program. The student government will work with first year seminar professors to place these skills sessions on their syllabi to encourage students to attend these once a week. This program will sponsored by campus organizations along with student government to plan, set-up, and produce the sessions.
Produce the “Carolina Connections Mentoring Program”
Mentor program for first year students to become leaders and have academic success in their first year. This program will hopefully be sponsored with the Carolina Leadership Development Office to run the program. There will be two focuses for this mentoring that will make it special; it is designed to allow students to work with professors/faculty and student leaders outside of the classroom to begin to plan their Carolina career as a student and a leader. This will be a competitive program because it offers a rare opportunity for students to interact with Carolina professors/faculty. This is designed to help first year students to take ownership of their Carolina experience from the beginning.

The Second Start Program for sophomores will help them get a brand new start for their school year. This will be a week long program focused on providing useful information for students to make good decisions for their academic and student life on campus. There will be days designed to provide information and resources like using advising to plan their school year courses, applying professional schools, re-evaluating your major, and working with Career services to look at options for their field of study for future internship or job opportunities. This will be a new boost for the school year.
Provide Juniors and Seniors with a “Online-Planning Calendar” for their future
The “Online Planning Calendar” will consist of critical information and reminders for juniors and seniors to stay on top of their planning for the future after Caroilna. The calendar will have the test dates for standardized test like the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and others. It will have the dates of the Career Fairs and the workshops with Career Services. It will also remind students to check their graduation requirements periodically throughout the year to avoid any academic set-backs. It will also provide a variety of options for post-graduation, so students can see the many opportunities they have to choose from. This calendar with be available on-line to print at the beginning of the year and it will be publicized well, in order to get students to make use out of this resource.
Promote a week long event called “Join a different group for the day” and end the week with a showcase of the week’s activities
This program is designed to encourage students to be a part of a different student organization for the week to experience working with other groups on campus. Each group that signs up for the program will receive a group of volunteer-students that will attend their meetings. They will host the students and show them the purpose and special projects the organization is currently involved in. They will do it in a fun way and document the experience through photos and videos and we will compile all of them at the end of the week and showcase it on the student government website.
Hosts a Parents Weekends for First Generation Students
Jasmin wants to host a weekend dedicated to the parents of first generation students for them to get the Carolina experience from their child’s perspective and also in appreciation of the parents’ work and support while their student finishes at Carolina.
Create a collaborative service event for student organizations. These organizations will join forces to give back to the Carolina community through an act of service
Jasmin would like to allow the organizations that commit to the program the flexibility of designing a unique act of service. The event will require strong planning between the groups, and will be designed and planned through regular monthly meetings. This venture will exemplify outstanding service on campus.
Increase awareness of public service opportunities on campus by creating a community service publication
The goal of this publication is to inform students of the great number of service opportunities on campus. This will be a monthly publication, and will be distributed in paper form as well as made available online. Jasmin aims to promote events for which student organizations need volunteers, opportunities made available through the Center for Public Service, and local community service events. This will be a way for students to get involved in community service at any time of the year.
Student Life
Create a “Carolina Market” in the Pit
The “Carolina Market” will bring together students, faculty, staff, and the community on three Fridays throughout the academic year, to showcase good produced in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area and create a sense of community spirit. This event allows people to see the best of Carolina through artistry and creativity and an opportunity for everyone to be a part of it.
Hold “Spend the Night at Carolina” in an attempt to provide students the chance to enjoy a memorable night at special Carolina location
Jasmin hopes this event will create a new experience that students can share with one another. She hopes that Student Government will hold the event in collaboration with other student organizations as well as Office of Student Affairs to include student performances, movies and other forms of entertainment. The aim is to make “Spend the Night at Carolina” an annual event that students can look forward to each year and use to add to their collection of Carolina memories.
Hold a “Men of Carolina” networking night to bring together outstanding male students, faculty, staff and alumni
Jasmin recognizes the contributions of both female and male students on campus, and hopes to continue recognizing and advancing student leadership. This event is meant to mirror current initiatives for women’s networking and provide our male students with the same opportunities.
Promote and provide more convenient times for safe zone and haven training for all students. She will also put a special effort toward encouraging student leaders to complete these trainings with their prospective student organizations.
Safe Zone and HAVEN trainings serve as valuable campus resources, and help foster a community of caring and accountability. Increasing the number of students who go through these training sessions will help to raise awareness and combat discrimination and abuse. The encouragement on behalf of the organizational leaders to complete the trainings with their students groups will serve as a declaration of intolerance of prejudice and violence within the organization as well as throughout the campus community.
Continue the Faculty led Student Service Project begun by the Raynor Administration
The value of this program lies in bringing students and faculty together in a shared unified effort. Not only does this program create opportunities for students to interact with faculty on a more personal level, the program also aims to uphold the value of service to the community that the University holds so highly.
Increase celebration of Carolina by hosting a “Party in the Pit”
Jasmin would like to bring all students together to celebrate the spirit of Carolina at the very heart of campus. Student Government will join with other student organizations to formulate ideas, collect funds, and recruit students to put the plans into action. Jasmin hopes that through collaboration and shared experience, students will be able to come together to appreciate all that Carolina has to offer.
Create a New Student Organization Showcase
Jasmin wants new student organizations to have a membership drive in the Pit. Fall Fest is the event where student organizations get their members, but it is hard for every organization to get students because they are new. Jasmin wants them to have an opportunity to jump-start their year with excited members and leaders.
Promote more club sports activities and achievements
Jasmin wants to bring more light to the contributions that club sports give to Carolina. She understands that there are problems such as funding that are faced by club sports teams that need to be addressed. She wants to student government to assist with promoting the great accomplishments of club sports and working with teams doing fundraisers to help increase their funds for competitions and equipment.
Technology
Put on a Technology Fair with ITS and other relevant campus organizations to showcase the technology that is offered to student on campus
Jasmin believes that events such as this are of great importance as they educate students regarding the technology services provided to them through the University. This fair aids in student outreach and helps to connect the student body to Student Government, ITS, and helps to insure that these campus services and resources do not go unused.
Promote and educate students about the Jumla and Mambo Integration programs that allow student organizations to have web pages by providing trainings and program advertisements
This initiative aims to encourage more student organizations to make use of the web space assigned to them once they are confirmed as a recognized campus organization. Jasmin proposes student organization trainings for organizational leaders to ensure that students are equipped with the skills necessary to create and update their web pages. Jasmin also plans to include this information in the packet for student organization renewal each year.
Encourage the increased development of SLICE in order to encourage its use and recognition as a valuable resource of information
Jasmin hopes to familiarize students with and excite them about using the SLICE website to learn about all events that are held on campus each month. The SLICE tutorial program will be made available for student leaders so that they can learn how to use the website as a means of promotion for their organizational events. Additionally, Jasmin would like to develop a more comprehensible interface for SLICE in order to improve the website’s clarity and organization.
Create a subcommittee or special project with the main focus of keeping slice accurately updated and aiding student groups in its use
Jasmin envisions this subgroup to serve as an important support system for student organizations. They will serve as the connector between student groups and SLICE in order to encourage more students.
Relocate the valuable and regularly used links on the My UNC webpage on more frequently used sites such as student central
Jasmin recognizes the value that lies in the functionality of student services websites, and the role that these sites play in meeting the needs of the students. Recently, financial aid information, which was formally only available via the My UNC webpage, has been made available on student central. Jasmin will work to continue this integration process to increase the convenience and practicality of the web services available to students.
Continue to support the movement toward an online academic advising system based on instant messaging both by peer, as well as trained, academic advisors
This system is aimed at addressing the student need for readied access to academic advisors. Jasmin recognizes the challenges inherent in expanding the system of advising, but by making use of peer advisors under the oversight of trained academic advisors, she believes an online messaging system for advising can be achieved.
Supports finding alternative printing sources in replacement of Pharos Printing failures
Jasmin wants to work with students to find new alternatives to assist when the Pharos printing system fails. She wants to get student imput on how we should remedy this reoccuring issue that students face. She will look economical and reasonable options for this and work with ITS to consider the suggestions.
Transfer Students
Improve advising for transfer students by joining with the Office of New Students and Carolina Parents program to look at the resources available and creating new ways to make information more accessible for prospective and current transfer students
This transfer student program will serve as a central resource for these students regarding the issue of credit transfer. Additionally, this service will help transfer students in addressing how to manage their academic careers at Carolina. Among the many changes, this will involve improvement in communication between transfer students and Academic Advising to ensure that all students are provided with ample guidance and resources.
Work with student organizations and university offices that work with transfer students to make a clear understanding the process of transferring to Carolina with a special focus on financial aid and advising
Student government can play a role helping transfer student access the information they need in order to have a successful start at Carolina. Student government can serve as a liaison between the student organizations and university offices in order to give the maximum assistance to transfer students with their questions and concerns.
Inform transfer students about student groups and Carolina events to encourage them to participate in order to connect them to Carolina
Jasmin wants to help transfer student connect better with Carolina during their transition to the university. She understands that it takes time to become accustomed to a new environment and the best way to cure that is to get involved and participate in student events to meet other students.
Create social events with student organizations for transfer students
Jasmin wants to help create social events for transfer students to help them meet other students who are also new to Carolina. She will make a special effort to reach out to the transfer students to get them to come to the events. She wants to facilitate stronger relationships between the transfer students to serve as support for one another through their transition.
Assist Out of State Students with their initial transition to and continued residence on campus.
One of the greatest challenges as an out of state student is getting off campus for living supplies that cannot be found on campus. Jasmin hopes to work with RHA to increase the number of trips to Target and Southpoint Mall for students living in residence halls that extend beyond the first weeks of fall semester.
Collaborate with Housing and Residential Education to begin conversations surrounding more understanding move in and out times for their out-of-state residents.
Perhaps the greatest concern for out-of-state students is transportation to and from the airport, and ensuring that each student has a safe and cost-effective place to stay during times of travel. Jasmin hopes to work with Housing to expand the dates and times that out-of-state students will be allowed to in residence halls to accommodate the needs and restrictions of out-of-state travel.
Bring transfer and out-of-state students together in order to create a supportive community to help ease the transition to Carolina
Transfer Students and Out-of-State Students have many overlapping concerns. By bringing these two communities together, Jasmin hopes to help create a network of support for these students and their particular needs.
Transportation
Work with the Department of Public Safety to expand the P2P locations and library shuttle perimeters provided in order to help more undergraduate and graduate students to get home safely
Jasmin knows that there are many students that are not able to use the services provided by the P2P to get to certain locations after dark due to area restrictions on and off campus. She will work with undergraduate students, graduate students, and the Department of Public safety to evaluate the current locations of service and either expand or revise the current system in order to serve more students.
Develop a regular system of transportation for students living off-campus in Chapel Hill and Carrboro in the form of shuttle or bus
Jasmin recognizes the great number of students who opt for off-campus housing around the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. Jasmin hopes to provide these students with convenient forms of transportation when the city buses are no longer running. This upholds the University responsibility towards its students by providing a valuable service that is not currently seen on campus while keeping students safe.
Build better communication and transportation availability for all students with regard to the Point-to-Point Transportation
Efficiency of pick-up and drop-off times of the P2P is especially important. Jasmin hopes to develop an accurate system of bus and shuttle time prediction by working with the University’s Department of Public Safety. Jasmin hopes to uncover both what the University as well as students can do in order to improve with communication and timely transportation.
Town Relations
Work with student organizations to improve the experience of homelessness in Chapel Hill
There are many initiatives to improve the homeless situation in Chapel Hill by student organizations and student government should a part of it. She will join in with projects and fundraisers that student organizations want to have in order to give supplies and help to the homeless or the homeless shelter(s)
Find innovative ways to outreach towards the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community to help build relations between the students and the residence
Jasmin wants the residence to be more invested into the work that the students are doing on campus in order to bring more support and excitement from the town about campus events. There are many ways to do this by continuing the Good Neighbor Block Party, inviting them to the Friday Market Place, and other events open to the public. This will help to make the residence more connected to Carolina students.
Continue to work with the Downtown Partnership in order to help provide student perspective in the development of Franklin Street and the city of Chapel Hill
Jasmin wants to help with building up Franklin Street business options that students need, want, and can appreciate. With student contribution, this can help the city of Chapel Hill possess more businesses that offer utility to everyone, but especially students who make up a portion of the residence.
Help students to understand the responsibility that they hold for being a residence in Chapel Hill on and off campus
Jasmin wants to help students to understand the importance of surveying their neighborhood for safety threats, participating in city elections, being informed about new legislation passed that affects the town of Chapel Hill. This will help with students becoming active community members in simple ways in order to have their concerns heard.
Tuition
Tuition Package
The Student Government will take on the responsibility with providing students with sound information concerning their tuition. Tuition is a very a critical area in a student’s career at Carolina as it determines many of their financial decisions. We want to help students understand the different components of tuition, in order to lower students’ frustration with rising costs in the current economic situation that the nation and state of North Carolina are facing. Through the Tuition Package, Jasmin will ensure that students are well informed about:
• How the State allocates money to the UNC system and specifically to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
• The percentage that student tuition contributes to operating the University yearly
• Help student to understand how tuition is allocated throughout the university
• Explain the importance of each student fee and what it pays for
• Show charts of how other peer institutions are handling their rising costs
• Show how we can limit the inevitable increase of student fees through individual responsibility
• Ensure that students can give feedback on how tuition is being used by the University
• Propose new cost-efficient plans for the next year in order to prevent raising student fees
Continue the Halloween safety initiatives set by the Raynor Administration
Jasmin will continue to support the efforts of the Raynor Administration to make Halloween a safe event for everyone. We will continue to search for safety measures that will create a safe environment that will satisfy the safety concerns of all participants. Halloween is a very special event to the town of Chapel Hill and we want to continue this tradition while keeping everyone safe.
University Services
Put Onecard Machines in dorms
Jasmin knows that this will provide more convenience for students to put money on their Onecard at all times. Onecard machines are currently located in places that close early on the weekends and are not convenient for all students. Also all students to do not have a Wachovia or MasterCard account to add money on their card through phone or online, which is why this is necessary.
Add more ATM machines in South Campus area
There is only one ATM machine on south campus that is close to the dorms and Rams Village, which is at Rams Head Dining Hall. We must find new, safe locations to add more ATM locations on South Campus so that students can conveniently access them.
Encourage Career Services to provide more resources for students to find and apply for international jobs and internships
Jasmin knows that students want to apply for international opportunities for their summer internships and careers without solely going through the study abroad programs. Career Services can help students to find and prepare themselves for international opportunities with informational packets and resources.
Work with the Housing Department to students to understand the system for informing students about housing deposits, housing applications, and room assignments
Many students would like to understand more about how the housing system operates on making decisions such as room assignments and informing students on the price of rooms. If we are able to provide more information for students on these important details, it will cause communication and relationships between students and the Housing Department when dealing with housing on campus.
Work with Carolina Dining Services to continue the initiatives set up in the Raynor Administration
In the Raynor Administration, Carolina Dining Services worked with student government on improving food quality and variety with Aramark, finding new locations for other dining options on campus, and working with bringing more local food options to campus with FLO. Work is in progress with these goals and should continue until we reach more student satisfaction.
Promote more use campus services such as the Learning Center, Writing Center, Campus Health, Career Services, Zipcar
Jasmin wants students to take advantage of more of the services that are paid for through student fees and are here to assist with their success at Carolina.
Women
Have a “Women’s Sports Day”
Jasmin wants to encourage more student spirit and support for all of the women’s athletic events. This will be a special time for women athletes to connect with their fans and rally them up in order to increase attendance to all women’s events. This will be collaboration between the Athletics Department, Carolina Athletics Association, and student government to make this a success.
Have “Women in the Science, Engineering, Mathematics Day”
Jasmin wants to raise awareness on campus about women in the Sciences. This will serve as an outreach for women to join these majors that need more female presence. This will be an opportunity to bring together students, professors, graduate students, and postdoctoral students to speak on behalf for women in the Sciences in order to encourage more female students to pursue the science field.
Work with the Week of Welcome to produce a collaborative program with the Women’s Center for incoming first-years to help them become familiar with the Women’s Center
Jasmin wants to reach out to incoming students, both male and female, to understand the importance of having a resource like the Carolina Women’s Center. This collaboration will allow students to see that the Women’s center is for everyone, not just women. Student government will be a partner with this initiative to spread the word about the Women’s Center in order for more students to become more familiar with its initiatives.
Have a Themed Women’s Networking Night with Graduate and Undergraduate students
Jasmin wants to connect graduate and undergraduate women to have discussion about particular topics focused around the themed night. This will present an opportunity for undergraduate women to get a perspective of life after undergrad. This will be a great way to for students to gather information about post-graduate options from the experience and expertise of the graduate women.
Produce a survey- focused on the experiences and concerns of women on campus
Jasmin wants Carolina be more proactive to the immediate concerns of women on campus. This would help access the areas on safety that the administration and student government need to focus on addressing in order to build a more responsive and safer campus.
Build stronger collaborative relationships with student organizations and CWC
Jasmin wants more student organizations to partner up with the Carolina Women’s Center more with events. The CWC has a wealth of resources and information that ca be very helpful with producing great student programming on campus.
Continue the Women Leadership Night
The Raynor administration created this program in order to bring together women leaders on campus to meet up and have discussion. The women were able to get an understanding the work that is being done by and for students on campus by women leaders. This can serve as a Women’s coalition on campus that can come together to discuss topics and issues concerning campus life both related and non-related to women.
