Technical Opportunities...

The Lab! is a training ground for all theatre artists, not simply actors and directors. Our fantastic group of tech alums have gone on to promising and lucrative careers after being introduced to their fields by The Lab! (such as McKay Coble, PRC designer and Chair of UNC's Department of Dramatic Art) and our current group of designers is steadily building their portfolios to tackle the world at the next level, such as our beloved Eileen Goddard who was recently accepted into The Juilliard School for lighting design (see Lab!'s Waiting for Godot and Equus). However, you don't need designer aspirations to get involved. Quite the contrary, many actors and directors get their starts through our technical program. Technical experience is wonderful training and exposure for all Lab participants as it provides a greater understanding of Lab's process and capabilities.
Assisting in our technical program is one of the easiest and most appreciated ways to get involved with The Lab. Why is it so easy and appreciated?
Well, let's do the math. Assuming one year we do a MINIMUM of 8 shows we need:
8 shows per year X 4 designers (set, sound, lights, and costumes)
+
8 shows per year X 2 board ops (light board operator and sound board operator)
+
8 Assistant Stage Managers
+
8 Assistant Directors
+
8 Prop Masters
+
8 Set Builds
___________________________80 POSITIONS TO FILL
= 80 WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
(not including additional running crew, operators, or wardrobe or additional
workshop productions or projects)
So please! We strongly encourage you to contribute to our technical program; whether it is to initiate your theatrical experience or to expand upon it we are eager to accommodate you. To receive more information regarding our technical program, e-mail Kate Wicker (klwicker@email.unc.edu).
