The Lab! Theatre performs in both the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre and Historic Playmakers Theatre and holds all rehearsals and meetings in the Center for Dramatic Art.
Kenan Theatre
Completed in 1999, the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre is a beautiful, sophisticated, and flexible performance space seating near 120 in the thrust configuration and over 200 when in the round. The theatre is located in the Center for Dramatic Art next to the Paul Green Theatre.
Historic Playmakers Theatre
The same stage that Thomas Wolfe and Andy Griffith performed on, this
National Historic Landmark serves as a traditional proscenium space seating 285.
Originally
built in 1851 as a Library for Benjamin Smith, the building was named Smith
Building and indeed, served as the University's until 1907 at which point it
became home to the the Law School until 1923. The Carolina Playmakers then
renovated the space in 1925 and has served as a primary campus performance venue
ever since.
Center for Dramatic Art
Rehearsals for all all Lab! productions are held studio rooms in the Center
for Dramatic Art, located off Country Club Road.
Completed
in 1998, the CDA is a 40,000 square-foot addition to the Paul Green Theatre, the
500 seat thrust stage which has served as the home to PlayMakers Reparatory
Company since 1976. The CDA provides four furnished acting studios which both
Departmental and Lab! shows share for rehearsal spaces and occasionally used for
workshop performances. Production and Lab! Board meetings are also held in these
studio rooms in addition to The Susan Lucci Green Room, which serves the primary
office of the Lab! Theatre.
