Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who should take the test?
As a general education requirement all students must complete through level 203 of a foreign language some majors will require through 204 Please consult the undergraduate bulletin for information about which majors require have this requirement.

All first-year students are required to take a Online Language Placement test found at https://www.unc.edu/languageplacement/index.php if your high school foreign language is Spanish, French, German, or Latin, even if you plan to study a new foreign language or if you have completed the AP Language/Literature, IB or SAT subject test.

For transfer students that have not completed their foreign language requirement in previous course work or AP, IB, or SATII credit, you will need to take the placement test in the language you studied in high school or at your first college university.

If you did not study French, German, Latin, or Spanish, please visit: https://www.unc.edu/languageplacement/otherlanguages.html and read the information about language programs that do not currently offer language placement testing during CTOPS or online tests.

Q: Do I need to take the online placement test if I have taken AP, IB, or SATII tests??
Yes, since these UNC language placement tests are online and do not take very long to complete, we ask that all incoming students with prior study of French/German/Latin/Spanish take them regardless of the other tests they may have taken. Often students who attend earlier orientation sessions have not yet received their scores and this allows them to go ahead and register. The higher of the scores will be used in awarding credit.
