LEARNing Illuminations

Illuminations: As the lens of a lighthouse concentrates and projects light, LEARN NC's multifaceted "LEARNing Illuminations" bring together a range of resources for professional development and classroom instruction to help you find new ways of helping students learn.

LEARN NC, a program of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, is a statewide network of educators using the power of the Internet to improve K-12 education in North Carolina. Our Web site, located at www.learnnc.org, provides a collection of resources designed by experienced North Carolina educators for classroom teaching and learning and for professional development.
To make our resources A LEARNing Illumination combines a variety of multimedia professional development materials that demonstrate new ways of teaching, with resources teachers can use to implement those ideas in their classrooms.
Our first LEARNing Illumination, released in September 2001, addresses the subject of Problem Centered Math. It is based on a week-long workshop we sponsored at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in May 2001, at which Grayson Wheatley, Professor Emeritus at Florida State University, demonstrated a constructivist approach to teaching middle school mathematics. This LEARNing Illumination combines video with narrative and illustrations to take teachers from theory to practice in problem centered math.
