Shoals and Westfield Elementary:
Square Dancing

TEACHERS AT SHOALS AND WESTFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS invited Eddie White, a local square dance caller, to teach students various figures and calls. In addition to learning to square dance, students compared present-day square dancing to the dancing of the past. This information was organized graphically using venn diagrams and double bubble charts.
     The art of square dancing presented many opportunities for mathematics integration. Based on their experiences with Eddie White, the students created their own mathematics story problems to solve.
