CMC discography

THIS "DISCOGRAPHY" OF SUGGESTED RECORDINGS will help you plan a classroom curriculum around traditional music. The discography reflects the diversity of North Carolina's traditional music and the success of these recordings as they have been used in CMC classrooms. These recordings are in print and are available for purchase. Additional out-of-print recordings are available from the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Of course, the artists listed here are from North Carolina. Teachers in other states should contact their state or local arts council or a local library or university for suggestions.

Etta Baker*, blues musician

Rev. Gary Davis lived during the 20s, 30s, and 40s in North Carolina and played the blues with Blind Boy Fuller and Sonny Terry. He was ordained in 1933 at Washington on the Pamlico River off the coast.

Cullen Galyean, banjo player, and Bobby Harrison, flat-pick guitarist

Let Me Fall: Old Time Bluegrass from the Virginia-North Carolina Border. Folkways F 3910, 1984. (Smithsonian Folkways: cassette, $10.95; CD, $19.95)

Cullen grew up in Low Gap, North Carolina next to the Virginia border. Both men lived also in Galax, Virginia. The songs on this recording are traditional songs and songs which were written by country musicians from the 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Bill, Billie Ray, and David Johnson

The three are from the Western mountain region and play banjo, guitar, and fiddle, respectively.

Menhaden Chanteymen*, worksong singers

Won’t You Help Me to Raise ‘Em. Global Village Music CC 220, 1990. (Global Village: CD, $15.00)

"Organized in 1988, some fifty years after many of the members first sang work songs associated with North Carolina's menhaden fishery. The Menhaden chanteymen recreate the African American flavored, call-and-response songs of their youth. Scruggs is from Cleveland County.

Sonny Terry, blues harmonica and washboard player

On the Road. Folkways F 2369, 1959. (Smithsonian Folkways: cassette, $10.95, CD, $19.95)

Sonny Terry’s Washboard Band. Folkways F 2006, 1955. (Smithsonian Folkways: cassette, $10.95, CD, $19.95)

Terry was born near Durham. In On the Road, Terry is joined by J.C. Burris and ‘Sticks’ McGee. Washboard Band features blues and jumps with Terry on washboard, washtub, and bones.

Doug* and Jack Wallin, ballad singers

Family Songs and Stories from the North Carolina Mountains. Smithsonian/Folkways SF 40013, 1995. (Smithsonian Folkways: cassette, $10.00; CD, $15.00)

Doug and Jack Wallen are traditional ballad singers from Madison County. Many of Doug’s songs begin with the melody on fiddle and are then unaccompanied. Jack accompanies himself on banjo or guitar.

The Watson Family*

Pickin the Blues. Flying Fish 70352, 1985. (Amazon.com: CD $14.49)

The Doc Watson Family was recorded by Ralph Rinzlier from 1963 to 1965. In Pickin’ the Blues, Watson shows a Piedmont blues picking style similar to Etta Baker.

These are recordings made by Karen Helms between 1976 and 1980. Union County is located in the south-central part of the state. These recordings show the breath of traditions in this area from performers of all ages: spirituals, hamboning, ballad singing, banjo and fiddling, a capella quartet and choral gospel singing
