THE UNDERGRADUATE MINOR

The undergraduate minor in Linguistics combines well with majors in many fields, including (but not limited to) Anthropology, Communication Studies, Computer Science, Education, English, Mathematics, Philosophy, Psychology, and majors involving foreign languages and literature.

Students who plan to minor in Linguistics are encouraged to fulfill their General College Social Science Perspective with LING 101[30]: Introduction to Language (Fall and Spring). If you are considering the Linguistics minor and are having trouble enrolling in LING 101, please contact us at the department.

REQUIRED COURSES

Four Linguistics courses numbered 200[60] or higher (except LING 400[100]) are required for the minor. Two of the four must be chosen from the following "core" courses:

LING 200[60]: Sound Patterns in Language (Spring)
LING 201[61]: Introduction to Transformational Grammar (Spring)
LING 202[62]: Linguistic Variation and Language Change (Fall)
LING 203[63]: Language Acquisition and Development (Fall)

In order to fashion a coherent program of study that complements the student's major, Linguistics minors are encouraged to select their remaining two courses in consultation with the department Undergraduate Advisor. Information about which courses are related to various areas of interest is also available on the Designing your major program page.

Students interested in counting a language-related course that is offered by another department and not cross-listed with Linguistics may petition the Department Chair or the Undergraduate Advisor.
