The Kappa
Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad, Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. was
founded on October 31, 1998 by five strong,
determined women: Lisbert Avila, Paola Gómez, Joia Pardo,
Annette Rodríguez, and Solimar
Santos. Early on in their experiences as undergraduate students, the Kappa
Chapter Hermanas realized that no organization on campus satisfied their
needs for unity among women, pride in the Latino culture, and involvement in
the community. They felt that there was a need for a quality Latina sorority at Duke University, one that would enrich the campus by promoting these ideals.
Greatly impressed by the
professionalism, unity, and genuine commitment to community service and to
the sorority demonstrated by Hermanas they encountered, these women felt that
a Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.
would serve the needs of Latinas at Duke University and its surrounding community. It is with pride that Las
Hermanas of Kappa Chapter strive to offer programming to the larger community
in the name of our beautiful Hermandad, hoping that many strong and dedicated
women will continue to build on the foundation that they have established for
years to come.
The
following year, during the summer of 1999, Olivia Rivera, Hermana Wahixane, of the Fall 1998 Pledge Class of Theta Chapter,
worked with administration and students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to establish the Sorority there. After months of hard
work, determination and obstacles, Olivia Rivera and another student, Dawn
Anderson, obtained official recognition for Latinas Promoviendo
Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. at UNC-CH. On October 30, 1999, one day before the first anniversary of Kappa's founding at Duke University, La Hermandad officially reached the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the crossing of the Fall 1999 Pledge Class of Sussy Portillo and Dawn Anderson.
